I would like blacken my Kahr MK9 and I've wanted to see if anyone had some luck with Robars black oxide process. I was going to try E treat but EGW said that they couldn't do the extractor or mag catch. I'm waiting for a call back from Gunslingers about the DLC finish as I don't know who else is currently offering that service. I already tried Kahr Arms as well and they stated that they will not blacken single guns. Any suggestions would also be appreciated, thanks.

You can try Ionbond (I believe it is some type of DLC coating), but as some of the smiths here will tell you they don't have a perfect record. For a Kahr it might be worth a try, but I wouldn't send my $5000 custom to them yet.

I have two stainless Colt slides (a 5" and a Commander) which have Robar's chrome sulfide stainless blackening. It looks like matte black oxide on carbon steel and wears about the same. The corners and high points will get shiney with use, but I really don't mind that.

I haven't tried it yet, but will in a couple of weeks.

Robbie is a great gentleman and does stand behind his products.

Best,

Ray

I had a smith blue a stainless Colt slide and it worked out very well. It wasn't the exact treatment that is done on carbon guns, but I'm not sure how it's different. The end result wasn't blue, it was more black, I just know it wasn't a spray & bake. It worn as well as any blue.

Marsh, could you send me the contact for this smith. I have a couple ideas on a stainless build, and would like to know more.

As for EGW. you can request the mag catch and extractor to be E-treated, but they make no guarantees since they can either come out right or come out ruined. In cases such as this, I like to fit a few extra parts in case the latter happens.

Thanks,
Bob

Ned,

Robbie told me that they blacken stainless. That was as of about 2 weeks ago when he gave me the tour of the place.

Best,

Ray

OK.... either they are doing it again or they no longer offer the finish.... to me :(

I've had nothing but the very best service from those guys. Their finishes are more expensive than some but the quality and service are the best, so the value is great.

I have a Lighweight Commander that I had TTI put a black teflon finish on the slide. Is this a finish that will wear off easily? I don't know the chemical detail - it was inexpensive and looks great. What will this mean for the future of the gun? Should I just have it redone when it wears or go another route if it doesn't last?

having just researched all of the new wonder finishes that i could find, the reason that EGW, ION, etc do not coat the small parts is that ALL parts are submersed in a bath at 1,300 degrees for 45 minutes to 1 hour. you draw your own conclusion as to what this does to the temper of the metal involved.

I got a quote for Robar to refinish my Remington 700 custom take down rifle in black stainless. The finish runs about $295, and it is not the most durable for a take down rifle IMHO. Robar finishes are great and hey stand behind their work, but the finish is relatively thin to darken stainless and subject to wear & tear + gun blast residue/cleaning.

I prefer a moly style finish from Robar, Birdsong or even if professionally applied Lauer finish.

Just my .02 c ents.

Actually another member here offered me a wonderful deal with blackening the gun however just after I had a custom gun finish up so it will have to wait. I did also contact Kahr about having them do it in their DLC finish but they declined. Kahr stated that they did it once for a customer and it costed about $600 due to it being a single gun.

Keven, if you revisit the Ion Bond process I think you'll find that the tungsten DLC goes on at under 400 degrees.
