I know this has been talked about here before but I just can't find where...
What is the one thing lots of people do on Ti guns to improve function and durability?

If I recall Tripp has some special treatment for the rails or something?
Can someone tell me about it?

Also, what do you guys think of Black-T on a Ti gun?

I've got a Yost Ti Commander that I bought from a forum member. It had a Black T finish which wore at the contact areas of the frame rails. As it wore, it got somewhat sluggish in cycling since the Ti to steel contact areas had more friction than Black T on Black T. I spoke to Virgil Tripp and sent it to him to get the frame rails and slide rails carbidized. This is a process which deposits carbide on the surface of the metal. I've had it back for two weeks now and the slide has much less friction than before and functions well. If you could, it's better to get the carbidizing treatment done before the gun is finished. Tripp did it on my Black T finished gun and it came out fine, cosmetically in some areas isn't as good as before the treatment since they had to remove the Black T from the areas to be treated.

I built a Ti commander. Caspian fit the slide to the frame and then carbided the frame rails. I had the slide Melonited. The fit is rock solid. I think the cost was $50 for the fitting and $25 for the carbiding. Anyone that has worked with Ti will tell you this is a GREAT deal. I think the prices have gone up a little since I had mine done. I'm sure that Tripp would do a quality job also.

You could have the gun accurailed. this would eliminate the ti/steel contact and should make for an easier fit-up/build.

I don't think that Accurails would help on a Ti pistol. The only part of the rails that wouldn't gall would be where the Accurails are. The rest of the rails would be subject to wear.

I have a question concerning the same issue

does anodized aluminum have been wear characteristics or less prone to galling than...

carbonized Ti?

I have a PC SW 4563 that was tight fitted alloy frame to a forged STS slide with over 13g of ball or duty type ammo and the slide to frame fit is still considered fitted. no noticable wear or galling, even though it appears the anodizing has been shined off.

I too am thinking down the road for a duty type carry 1911 and would want the lighter weight of the alloy or Ti, but would want no accelarated wear or galling.

The only contact should be on the accurails that is the whole point of putting them on a gun.

My understanding of the Accurails may be wrong. If that is the case I appologize. However, it appears that there is contact on the frame rails other than just where the rails are located. This can be seen on the photo posted by CT Brian on his 9mm Colt Commander build.

These are a couple of Photos of a Caspian Commander receiver with a Caspian Officers carbon steel slide and an Ed brown stainles barrel. I built this with Dave Sample with Don Williams doing the machine work and Ted Yost blued the slide. It is a shooter with 3,000 plus rounds. See the target below. It runs perfectly. The is no visable wear with magnification of the slide to frame.

My experience has been more or less the same. I had a Caspian Ti commander built. It's a real shooter and generally runs great. After 5000rnd I gave it to the smith for some tweaking and a close look at wear and tear. He reported no visible wear at all on the frame. The only thing I can report from experience in the Ti guns like to be well lubed and the frame to slide action is much smoother using a good gun grease vs oil. Other then that, I love the gun. I left the frame untreated BTW which I like the look of.

PS, who makes that trigger? I like it. Might change the STI trigger I have now for that. Slide stop is mighty pretty also.

I currently have a TI commander frame in line with Ray Harm's and probably going to try a 10mm in it.

Sound like a worthy project.

Trigger is CMC but I do not think they are available right now. The slide stop is bead blasted stainless Caspian with Dave's hand checkering. My hand checkering still needs some work.
