Anyone who knows me will tell ya’ that I truly love to build 1911s. I don’t think a day, or hour, or minute, or even second goes by that I’m not working with or thinking about 1911s in some way. Every build presents me with something new whether it is a challenge met, further knowledge gained, or the satisfaction of doing it even better than before. And, while finishing a gun is always fulfilling, every now and again there are the builds that are rewarding on more than just the usual merits of the conversion… this gun is one such instance.

Image

The gun started life as a ‘60s era Colt Commercial complete with the roll-marks we all love and some of the typical Colt “characteristics” that we’ve come to expect. These often challenging “characteristics" always make for a rewarding sense of accomplishment when the shooting begins and your able to look back on the time spent turning a stock gun into something that can be used and carried for a lifetime to come. But, all of that aside, the best part of this particular build was knowing that the gun was going to a gentleman who, when he probably had much bigger priorities, went out of his way to contribute to and support LTW and our membership during one of our past efforts.

When his gun arrived at the shop some time ago there was a short letter with the piece outlining the owner’s basic desires and needs but giving overall control of the conversion to the builder. With no rush from the then overseas owner, occasionally Ted and I would banter back and forth about what was to be done to the gun but when the time came and I started filling, banging, scratching, and grinding I knew that only the best I had to offer would do, so this gun got it all... besides, with a Colt Commercial in front of me how could I do any less. From the frame and slide fit, to the hand-cut checkering, to the complete line straightening, Kart barrel, and right down to the polished blue finish this was certainly a gun and an owner who deserved the best... enjoy! :D

That was my first thought too. If it is, I'd say he was deserving of it and more.

That is a beautiful gun. All of the mechanical things I want, and all the pretty things I like. And blended together so well.

Jason....
It's awesome.
:D :D :D
I'm working on distinguishing characteristics between your work and Ted's.
There is a difference. I just can't finger it definitively, yet.
And by the way....over 15% are lefties. That's 1 in 7 last I checked.

I will leave it up to you, Jason, to decide how to take this, but my wife just looked over my shoulder and said and I quote "Oh, what a Pretty gun!"

My initial response was closer to Dayum!!!!!

The serial number looks real familiar...but after that write up and those pictures there's no way thats the pistol I sent out..

WOW, Jason!!! That sure is an amazing transformation!!!! I am certain that Thanks would hardly scratch the surface.

So you know, I'm not very good with words or writing them down...so my full response will be forth coming...I just had to make sure you knew I saw it and it has me at a loss for words...

Jim

Jim, That's something WE frequently say about you. Enjoy your new ride in the best of health, with the thanks of the entire LTW community. Jason went above and beyond trying to put an identity into this project that would complement you. He's obsessive, detail freakish, never satisfied, and I wondered if he'd ever get this one done, but one thing was certain from the start - it would make you both proud.

Thank you again for all the great things you do. I for one, am anxiously awaiting our first meeting at SHOT.

Jason, the care and craftsmanship you put into this build really show! You're right... the owner deserves the very best.

Jim my friend, enjoy your "new" Colt! Thanks for everything you do for all of us. It means more than we can ever show.

Mark

Very nicely done and a nice write up about the gun and your compassion for 1911's as well. Very cool!

I really hope that when I send in my Commercial Colt, it will turn out as well as this one did.

Well done!

It's my first peek back in here after the owner's identity was "officially" revealed.
I'm glad to know our guesses were correct and that it's going to a good, and deserving, home.

Who made the holster?

Thanks so much for the kind words buddy. :)

That rig is from Alex Nossar, it's his Valovak IWB and it's one beautiful holster! Alex makes some incredible gear and for me this holster has opened a whole new vista into IWB rigs. The holster is very comfortable and allows excellent access to the gun all while making a 5" 1911 nearly undetectable. I was blow away when I realized how well this holster hides a gun. You ought to try one...

Ok,

I’ve been waiting, oh so impatiently to write this and because of it I am probably writing a bit pre maturely to encompass everything I wanted to. Fact is I just can't wait.

This pistol is absolutely everything I hoped for and far more.

I got called for an impromptu armed detail recently and all I had in my vehicle was this beautiful pistol, having just taken it out for a bit of range time. My range time was cut very short but in the brief time I had it out I am thrilled to report, WOW!!!!!

Jason this is an amazing pistol. Being my first custom my basis of knowledge is limited. But it ate Black Hills hollow points without so much as a hiccup. It did so out of every magazine I had. That ranges from the Wilson that came with it to old beat up mil issue. Trigger pull was like cutting butter with a hot knife and it hit center mass a 10 yards so consistently that the fact there was more than one hole was basically because I couldn’t come close to doing justice to the ability of the gun.

I didn’t get to really shoot more than off hand and less than two boxes, but when I actually get to the range to shoot seriously I will post both photos and a more in depth results of how this pistol should be in the hands of someone far better than I.

Durring the detail I couldnt count the number of compliments and the raised eyebrows it drew from LEO and some others who's opinions I hoild in higher regard.

Jason you are an amazing smith and artist as is anyone else that had a hand in this fine pistol. I couldnt be prouder of having it on my hip and in my hands.

Thanks, I know that doesnt come close to meeting my intent but in the English language thats the best I can get.

Jim
