A while back we were approached by a friend of ours named Roy who does some writing and editing for a little magazine called American Handgunner. Roy had the neat idea of a matching pistol and knife both crafted from Damascus steel and he wondered if we would have a hand in it. Never ones to turn Roy down, Ted promptly volunteered me for the job and what you see here is the final result.

Ignore the gun for a minute and focus on the nice stuff in the pictures  ... the project begun in the shop of famed knife maker Kirk Rexroat (http://www.rexroatknives.com). Kirk crafted this stunning fighting style bowie and at the same time made my job even harder, after all how do ya’ make something to compliment a piece of steel like that one.

The holster, mag case, and knife sheath was my way of making sure this set had something very nice to ride in. For that task I contacted my pal John Ralston at 5 Shot Leather (http://www.5shotleather.com) and managed to con him into making me something to help make this set even better. John really stepped up to the plate for me, and in short order no less, by making a one-off knife sheath along with his phenomenal CBS belt holster and SSP mag case. John’s kind of humble about this whole holster making thing but I’ll tell you outright, if you don’t have a rig from John yet ya’ better get to it before he gets even busier that he already is. John’s holsters are perfectly executed and extremely well thought out and he is making some of the nicest holsters I’ve seen in a long time.

Keep a look out for this set in American Handgunner early next year... for now enjoy the pictures. :D

I really wish I could figure out how to fix my computer and post on the other site about the black rifle too.

Wow Mr. Burton...I like....I like them a lot. I'd almost like to have some alone time with them!

The barrel bushing really caught my eye there. Top to bottom, side to side, I just can't stop looking at those pictures. I'm a very big fan of Damascus knives and have been itching to get a slide. If you don't mind me asking, was there any curve balls in working with this slide or was it pretty much the same as any other?

Whatever the case, it is beautiful. Job well done!!

Take care,
Bob

That knife is beautiful. And the leather looks perfect! ...............
Oh ya and the blaster is nice too.

What a great set. I'm glad I'm all paid up to American Handgunner for the next couple of years. Thanks for the sneak peek!

Sooo...Has Burton arrived yet? 8)

Quite probably the shortest incubation time ever for a fully vetted, although half sized pistolsmith

Proud of ya, Kid.

Okay, this isn't helping my fascination with all things Damascus.

I'd try to comment intelligently, but my fingers are losing traction with all the drool on my keyboard.

Simply fantastic!

The Damascus is very nice material. I like the lines that show up on the top of the slide when the serrations are cut. Very nice work Jason

First, congratulations on a very, fine piece or work.

Second a question as usual, on damascus steel, is it available in stainless, or a non-corrosive material.

Beautiful work, Jason. It looks quite different than when when you showed it to me in the raw several weeks ago. What artists like you, Ted, and others here produce from a steel canvas is amazing. I'm not real artsy, but even I can recognize a Masterpiece.

The following quote is certainly applicable here:

"My Life Is Too Valuable To Depend On A Mediocre Time Piece, Firearm, or Blade"

Major Richard Paradies, C.A.S.

Best regards,

Jim

Wow, that is unreal. The slide serrations on the rear and top are awesome with the damascus! However, the tone's on the barrel and bushing are my favorite. Incredible work!!

Thanks for all the comment guys :D ... this gun was interesting to do because, throughout the process, we never knew what the final product would look like until the slide was etched. It ended up hiding the serration pattern on the slide top but it really made the rear slide serrations come alive.

It should be pretty obvious that I owe allot to Ted... my learning curve was only accelerated because of his help. I think having shot and used the guns for some time before working with Ted may have helped me, but everything I know about machining plus a whole bunch more I owe to ol’ Theo. He likes to make fun of me for being slow but I just say I'm cautious 'cause we all know I've got allot to live up to.

Bob – Not really any curve balls working with the slide... well other than not knowing exactly what the etched pattern would or would not show. The slide was nice and straight, machined well, and was relatively easy to cut. The only hard part was not getting dizzy while looking into all those squiggly lines. :? :?
