Gentlemen,

I wanted to see if any of out esteemed builders have given a look at the new Remington 1911. I am interested to see how it compares to a base Springfield Armory Mil Spec. From the photos, it looks cleaner but that exterior does not tell the complete story. I'm sure I'm not the only one that is looking at this idea.

Thanks in advance.

Rob

Not sure how much this would matter considering it would be refinished after most custom work anyway, but, the two that I have handled had noticeable cast lines on the front strap and the trigger guard.

I have nothing against cast frames (Caspian frames are top notch) but the presence of visible casting lines on the outside of a finished pistol kinda worries me.

Ned,

I think that they are going to have an uphill battle to be as good as Springfield!

Lets see what they look like when they hit the stores.

I have seen inside one as far as a field strip takes you. I didn't see any big turn offs, but at the same time, didn't see anything that made me want to build on one worse than a Springfield Mil-Spec and definitely not worse than a Series '70 Colt. I also believe that until you get neck deep into one, you're never gonna really know what potential problems there are.

But Joe, those loose tolerances are what will make that Remington 1911 sooooo reliable

In all seriousness thanks for the review. I've got a strange feeling that we won't be seeing any reviews like that anywhere that will get this info to a large number of people.

Thanks again for the detailed review.

Joe,

Thanks for the honest evaluation, it's appreciated.

now i'm not a smith, but have been looking at mil-spec's for months, and couldn't find one that i was happy with.
when i saw the R1, i felt that it was put together (out of the box) better than the mil-spec's that i've handled.

my R1 had some difference's than the one Joe looked at.
this one didn't have any slide/frame movement.
cycling the slide was smoother than a mil-spec.
the trigger was ~4# and had grittiness.
the barrel was tight,
i need a bushing wrench or move the slide out of battery to get the bushing off.
there was a little back/front movement on the extractor, but not much and similar to the Loaded that i have.
the MSH was tight and needed to pry it a little to start it's way out of the frame.

i've contacted Drake Oldham (who is local to me) about doing some work on this.
he's has few projects going on so he won't be able to get to this until next year.

here's some pics that i took when i got my R1.

the ejector is sunk in a little so there is a strange shadow from the slide making it look like it's stepped.
