Here’s a pretty neat pair that Ted and I recently finished up...

Image

Ted and I generally work individually on one gun at a time but when these guns came up the bug hit us and we both jumped right in. And if you ask me there’s not much cooler than a classic Colt Government Model with an equal LW Commander for a reload.

The gentleman who owns these guns had a clear vision of what he wanted for them when he dropped them off at the shop some time last year. Retro styled shooters was the order of the day and he gave Ted and I free reign to change what needed changing and fix what needed fixing in order to insure these guns would shoot for a long time to come. His major request was to keep the guns looking somewhat original and overall classic but to make them matching shooters.

In addition to keeping the Commercial thumb safeties and stock grip safeties we retained the spur hammers on both and shortened them up proportionally to each gun. Most of the internals such as sears, disconnects, triggers, ejectors, extractors, firing pin stops, plunger tubes, slide stops, etc. were tossed for better quality parts and we installed Kart barrels and EGW bushings along with Retro rear sights with dovetailed fronts with gold line inserts. We gave them serrated front straps to match the newly blended serrated mainspring housings and rounded out the bottom end with hand-beveled mag wells. Last thing was to border the slides and polish them out... enjoy the pictures! :)

Ok, will the proud owner of these fine twins please step up and take a bow? If they belong to who I think they do, I just have one word...

DIBS!

I love the grips, they really complete the whole package. Are they just the standard Colt grips?

Hey Jason:

Beautiful pistols! Why a spur hammer on the commander?

Did I build that leather for you or did you get it indirectly? I don't recall building a holster for you but then I don't remember everything either :D

Really nice guys! I like them both...will you please tell me if the ejection ports were lowered? I see they're not flared in any way...thanks for the inspiration.

Hi guys, Thanks all for the compliments on the guns. They are finally home and happy with thier compadres in the safe. To answer Matts question, I specifically asked for a spur hammer. When I dropped the guns off to the boys at Y-B I explained that I wanted a matching set of retro "shooters". Nothing racy or high tech, don't need any top shelf fancy machining, nor do they have to be deep cover tactical concealed guns. Just something basic for fun shooting be it at targets or pine cones.

My "wants" list was retro sights with Goldline front sights, spur hammers, GI recoil spring (hate those FLGR's) and tang grip safties. Add serations just to add some art and the standard thumb safties were fine with me, (I think that was where I won Jasons friendship). Anything else I missed or that they felt were important they had freedom to do. Once it came time to work on them the two biggest issues that came up were changing the barrels and adding a french boarder both of which were recomended.

To say I couldn't be happier is an understatement, the guns came out exactly as I had wanted. It's pretty common knowledge that Ted, Jason and the rest of the guys at Yost-Bonitz are top notch professionals and very kind folks on top of that. I'd like to thank them for thier hard work and friendship.

No I got this one "second hand"... damn fine rig too and especially cool for this picture set! 8)

Yup they were lowered just enough to keep them "retro" but still functional.

Schlamoo -- Glad to hear your enjoying the pistols... Ted and I had a loot of fun doing them. And your right, as soon as I heard you say "standard thumb safeties" I knew we were gonna' be friends.

Thanks for all the comments guys! :D

Both of these guns are absolutely flawless. Great choices and execution.

Hey Jason:
Thank you! Yes, I think the ISP-NR (Nelson Retro) rig fits right in with those beautiful retro Colts.
