Anyone have a custom LW Commander with stock or govt-style grip safeties (non-beavertail)? Or do you feel that the increased felt recoil requires one? Pix anyone?

Other than the finish, this pre-XSE Enhanced LWT Commander is stock Colt. I believe the grip safety is called a "duckbill". It prints less than a beavertail, but is a little bigger than a GM standard grip safety. For a carry gun, I prefer less-print to comfort. It would be the opposite for a range gun.

The existing one is an older Colt, so it's more of a tang grip safety. Not comfortable and I know it either has to be changed to a government style grip safety or alter and shape the existing. I just like the look of a stock grip safety, but if it can't be done, I guess it'll be a beavertail.

Hoser,

You can also pick-up a later model Colt grip safety tang. It is already contoured for the Commander hammer.

I have a light weight Officer's ACP with the stock Colt tang and felt recoil is not a problem with full power loads. Also, because my hands are relatively small, the thinner grip safety allows me to get a better grip on the pistol.

HTH,
John

The look you're going for is the only one we used to be able to get (pre-beavertail). In a LW, I think it does hurt a little more.
Another alternative is to have the guys at Y-B do a 1* set-up, with a Govt. hammer and long factory grip safety substituted for the Commander hammer/grip safety.
I have a link to pictures of one somewhere; when I find it, I'll email it to you.

hoser,

It's a shame you're not closer as I'd be happy to let you try it out at the range. I'm very pleased with how it feels (very comfortable, no pinching/biting/etc.), and it's a very classic look. Everyone who's ever held it and/or shot it has liked it.

pezzulli is right, newer Colts have a grip safety that's relieved for the ring hammer, but I find it much less comfortable (seems shorter and narrower), here's a pic of my NRM commander:

I'm sending my NRM off for a small amount of work soon, and I plan to have the grip safety from my 9mm commander replicated.

Here's one of my favorites. The stock grip safety is dehorned and rounded. Quite comfortable...if you get a proper grip every time  If not, well you'll be the first to know!

Hello All,
Sorry to be late to the party, I haven't been on the forum for awhile. Life has been crazy!

Ted, that Commander sure looks like the one in my safe right now! :D It hasn't bit me yet!

Hoser, I'm in Northern California. Let me know if you'd like to see it or shoot it.

Hey Brian,
If that Yost Colt is yours, I'd like to do more than shoot it! How much!!??
:P

Actually, I have an older Colt coming back from John Harrison soon. I kept the whole retro thing.
:D

I don't have a picture of my LW Commander handy to show you ... but I salvaged a "take-off" grip safety from a Colt 1991A1 Compact and installed it on the Commander. It worked perfectly with no modifications. They're already extended and relieved for Commander-style hammers straight from the factory. I'm sure you could find one on the gun flea market. See "borrowed" photo of Colt Compact below...

I have a lightweight Colt Officers frame that a customer was very generous and gave me as he wasn't doing anything with it. I put a commander length slide, a small ammount of new parts, but pretty much put this together with old Colt parts I had laying around. Topped it off with a ramped dovetailed front sight and a Yost Pro rear.

I'm getting it back from Birdsong today, but won't be able to post pictures of it till I'm back from school (an hour and a half away from my shop durring the week).

I'll post once I have it in hand and finish the tuning. This will be my new bedside safe gun. I'd carry it if Illinois would let us. It will be a carry piece after I graduate and move out of state.

Anyway, pictures to come this weekend.

Bob

Here is my lightweight Officer's frame with Commander slide. Stock style grip safety with Commander hammer. Black Teflon, carbon fiber grips, and Kart barrel.

Not the best pictures in the world, yes I have to invest in a light box.

Mr. Miller,

Though I would prefer a bit more tail on the grip safety, I really like the cocking grooves and Hi Power slide relief. That is one sharp looking 1911.
