Could some of you please help me out. I am thinking of buying a "Combat Government" that is in near perfect condition. It has a rollmark that closely resembles this one:

http://louderthanwords.us/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5583

The difference is that it says "Combat Government" instead of "Government Model". I tried to research the pistol as much as I could, but I couldn't find out anything about them. I was wondering if they are any different from a colt commercial other than the sights, and what years they were produced.

I am going to get this and have it as my first, one and only 1911 and have it built up by a good smith and shoot the snot out of it. Would it be a good base gun for $900?

PM me you email address. I just got the October 10-8 Performance newsletter and Hilton Yam wrote about the Combat Government. I'll forward you the email newsletter if you give me your email address.

They make very good base guns in my view... they come with a serrated front strap, so you have to work with that. One of my favorite "factory" Colts.

OK, I went ahead and bought it. It doesn't have the front strap serrations that I can see. I'll have to go back and take the pachymr (sp?) grips off the thing to see for myself.

**ETA**
It does have the front serrations. Do you think they could be taken off for a blank high cut frontstrap?

Im no gunsmith, but the serrations on the Combat Govt. are usually deep, i think they are basically deep cut 20 lpi, not sure. I kinda like them, so my view would be to leave them alone, you can always do a high grip cut and if need be go back and recut them a bit if need be (if the front strap needing truing etc.).

Im sure whomever you have build the pistol will have some ideas on the topic.

Red,

I have a 1981 Colt Combat Gov't with serrations.

Am on Harrison Design waiting list. The serrations concerned me so I sent the frame only to John and let him measure the front strap thickness.

I don't know if I'm lucky or if it is the norm - but the front strap is thick enough to remove the serrations and refinish it with 30lpi checkering (25 or 20lpi wouldn't work as the cuts would be too deep)

I have a little bit of information about the Combat Gov't if you'll PM me with your email address - I'll forward it along.
