Guys, I have been very fortunate in this business to get to see and possess many fine pieces of work.

I have passing through this Collaboration by Richard Heinie and Larry Vickers which is built for the 1911 Society.

Here are a few pictures. I have them small as not to eat up band width but if you want higher resolution email for them but so far I have had two bounce with email over quota. There are 63 meg of pictures in high resolution.

Just remember I "ain't no perfushunul pikker taker" so the red lint, oil, and dust I have not removed is all there to see.

Very nice, thanks for sharing with us Terry. Although the trigger is so unlike Vickers, probably was Mr. Heinie's idea.

I will premise this by saying I do not know what work Dick or Larry did on this pistol, though I did see and handle the pistol at Dicks shop. In ref to the trigger, Dick makes and markets his own trigger, so my guess would be that if Dick had installed the trigger in this gun, he would have used one of his own.

Terry, you are a mighty fine pikker taker!

If the trigger was used in a SS prize gun, it was probably donated by SVI!

Is that chainlink checkering on front and back strap like the Ed Brown have? I really like those.

Some refer to the treatment as "chain link" while others refer to it as scalloping. It's not unique to only Ed Brown guns, it's been around for a long time, many pistolsmiths offer the feature. STI Trojans have them from the factory.

I believe and I am certain there will be some other comments that Heinie started scalloping on the PD package. Not saying he was first but one of the first to make it available to the custom world.

There is an old post on this board that was started when Ed Brown started using that grip pattern. Richard Heinie himself said that the scallops could be traced back to Ed Minshue at STI.

Lets clear this up now before it gets any further out of hand.
The scallops were and still are offered on STI Pistols. I had a person ask me if I could do something like it. I called STI and was refered to Ed Minshue. I asked Ed if there was a problem with me doing it. He told me to go ahead.
I figured out a pattern that covered more of the front strap, others have put more on that I have. As far as I know I am the first to offer this except for the STI factory Pistols.
Before somebody opens their mouth and says this is not as good as checkering. Here is the deal. It was in my case intended for those who thought checkering was to aggressive. It hurt their hands. The good thing with the scallops is, it can be made less aggressive or it can be cut in such a way that your hands will bleed. It also does not tear up cloth like checkering, if you carry concealed.
I have had several women tell me they like this much better than checkering because of their softer hands.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I like a women with soft hands.

Thanks for responding Richard. I think you won't find many people on this board that are close minded about alternative grip treatments.

Two comments from me:

First, I agree on women with soft hands

Secondly, I don't see too much on the forums (here or anywhere for that matter) from Richard himself, but whenever I have seen someone credit him for coming up with scallops he chimes right in and gives credit to STI. Not that a 'smith of Heinie's stature needs any "credit" but it is refreshing to see that he makes sure credit is given where credit is due.

Well, let's make it three comments instead of two, I too like the look and feel of scallops. I have a frame that SDM Fabricating did and it is the more aggressive type of application and find it to offer a great deal of traction but with more forgiveness in so far as "re-gripping" without loosening my hold too much.
