Does anyone have a write-up covering how a beavertail is added to a HP? I love High Power's but the hammer bite just kills me and my blood doesn't do the blueing any good either.

I am just curious about the process.

And feel free to add your pictures of HP's with beavertails.

Actually, the process is fairly simple: 1. Weld chunk of metal to frame. 2. Remove any metal that desn't look like the beavertail should. Seriously, the weld chunk of metal part is correct. Then a recess has to be machined in the new piece to accomodate the hammer, and the rest is all pretty much hand shaping, which is why no two are exactly alike.

You can have the hammer modified to not bite. If you get a chance, try a BHP that has been so-modified.

I tell you what Don did for me on a .40 HP. He took a Colt Beaver tail safety and cut off the lower half and then welded the tail part onto my HP and then fit is. Came out great and worked great too.

I am sure Don would be willing to give you more detailss.

rccolt,

Pleasd post the picture of your gun. I went to Don's site, when I was getting the pictures above but could find none with a beavertail. I would like to see some of his work, as I am sure others would as well.

Thanks,

tex

Interesting subject.

My problem with Hi-Powers is not hammer bite - it's the top left edge of the tang digging into the web of my hand with a high-thumbs hold.

I wonder if a beavertail might help prevent that? Or would a good melting of the stock tang's edges be sufficient?

-R.

Tex, Sorry, but up to now I've never taken any photos of a HP with a beavertail I've done. I do happen to have one in the shop now that I did, and it also has the aformentioned (on another thread) light mount on it, so maybe I can take a snap or two if time permits.

Loatime, where did you get the grips on the first HP. They are awsome.

Simonich Gunner Grips are available for the Hi-Power direct from Christine or their dealers.
