What stops the slides rearward travel? What parts of the frame and slide and possibly barrel are actually getting slammed into each other?

Rearward travel is stopped by the rear edge of the recoil spring tunnel (on the slide) impacting the front face of the recoil spring guide head.

Here's something very interesting. Talking to Dave Williams from the Springfield Custom Shot the other day at the Single Stack..... man the things he has tried, and I thought I was an experimenter. He cut off a slide behind the above-mentioned stop-motion point, so the silde could just come off the back for the frame. He assembled the gun and fired it-- and the barrel would tip in such a way upon unlocking that it would bind the slide and prevent it from coming off. He said he tried this dozens of times and never once did it come off!

I learn a ton every time I talk to Dave, I monopolize him every time I see him at an event. He's got some great resources to work with and a great bunch of guys working with him in the CS. I'm putting him in for a new nickname, "Knowledge" Williams :D

Ned, A couple of other things that would prevent the slide from coming off would be the barrel itself, as the link lugs impacting the VIS and the bushing impacting the front of the radial locking lugs would prevent this. Also, the ejector, assuming the pins didn't shear off should stop the slides rearward movement, as the clearance cuts for that would be lacking on the front of the slide. A bit different than the problems the military had with the Beretta early on........

It could, but it would have to shear the spring tunnel, ejector, and barrel feet off - or shear off the frame rails while popping up just enough for the spring tunnel to clear the frame.

Hollywood is just darn silly.

Speaking of Hollywood, Iron Man is my most favorit Marvel movie to date. If anybody goes to watch it, make sure you stay for all the credits. There is a clip at the very end.

Wow, that was a little off track, back to guns, powder, primer, and smiles.

Laffin... After a few more shots, it would be my cheek bone that would stop the rearward travel.
