Soon to be heading back home to it's owner, this Colt Combat Government Model presented a few challenges to work around. It had the usual rattles in the slide to frame fit, which was resolved by TIG welding the frame rails and remachining them to a proper tight fit with the slide. The factory front strap had me more worried than anything else. It came with a set of serrations giving rather smallish coverage to the area. The client wanted the front strap checkered and usually, there's just not adequate thickness left in the front strap to mill off the original serrations and then dig in deeper with a pattern of checkering. This is made worse by the factory mag well beveling around the inside of the front strap that was higher and deeper than normal. I looked at a lot of options and decided that the OEM serrations were unusually shallow and I might be able to squaek in 30 lpi checkering if I could get around the mag well bevel. I decided to TIG up the inside bevel of the mag well and remachine it to a more normal depth to reduce my worries of breaking through. Well, as you can see from the following pictures, it came out alright.

I think it came out better than all right. Your struggle with the factory serrations is one of the reasons I don't like those half a... attempt from the factory to make the buyers think they're getting some kind of custom feature.

What kind of finish is that? It looks good.

It's always great to see guns set up the way I would have done it. I'm also glad you managed to overcome those accursed serrations so nicely!

Very Nice work John. I'm sure the owner is going to be very happy.

WOW -- it came out alright -- is the understatement of the year.

I can't recommend John enough to anyone thinking about ANY mods to their blaster. I have an additional five slots reserved on his waiting list.

Regarding the front strap - When I sent John the gun and he discovered the 'front strap too thin issue', we discussed all the options, and, as I'm not partial to speed chutes, I'm sure I chose the most difficult option for any artisan, welding and re-machining.

I like the look of the Ionbond matte finish and am looking forward to my own testing for holster wear.

I can't wait to get it to the range. I'll let everyone know how it does.

Thanks John

Outstanding, John. I particularly like the rounding on the butt and the way you've blended the grips. Everything flows nicely there.

FedEx delivered the box about 10AM.

WOW. Thank You John !!! Exactly what I wanted, wished for. The grips, minimizing the grip safety, short trigger, front strap and MSH checkering, opening of the rear sight - they all work together - it points like it's an extension of my eyes - what computer guys call; Intuitive.

The trigger action - Oh My God... I haven't even lubed it yet, and the trigger action is, in a word, Perfect.

By removing the Colt serrations and adding the 30lpi checkering - it reduced the overall grip size, making the gun much more comfortable.

The round butt - When I grip the gun, I can't feel it. The gun is just comfortable in the hand (like it was built specifically for me). My clothing and automobile bucket seats will appreciate it.

I love the build photos on CD. What a story.

I'll get to the Range ASAP.

THANKS

I saw one of Mr Harrison's guns at the last gunshow I attended. It was absolutely marvelous!

I have seen enough of Mr. Harrison's work / Ionbond finish to know that I want one too! Congradulations on a gorgeous pistol. :!:
