Post subject: Colt Stainless Series 70
PostPosted: Sat Jun 14, 2008 11:45 am
This is a Colt Stainless series 70 I built for myself. Got some help from Ted with machine work and some clean up of my screw ups  My first attempt at checkering and it has some issues, but I think I'll hang on to this one for a while.

Nicely done, Mark.

Whose beavertail did you use ? And while I recognize the grips, when did they start making them in maroon, rather than the red on their website ?

The beavertail is Wilson. The stocks came from VZ, but I think there are the same as the red ones listed. The lighting in my photos is not ideal ;)

Nicely done cousin. 8) Remember you are comparing your work with the best.

I collect another form of art and when I get to thinking that my favorite artist charges too much, i give it a try myself. I quickly come to realize that his work is a bargain :)

Keep on building!

Nice job!

I also like the SN#.

Nine is my lucky # and I won't sell any firearm who's SN# adds up to a 9.

Nicely done, Mark! I'll be doggone if you don't have the grip safety cuts down pat. Don't ask me how
I know, but that can sometimes go awry! I'd like to give hand checkering a try myself. Somehow I don't
think my attempt would come out looking *quite* that nice. :)

I really like the bead blasting on the frame contrasting with the nicely finished (but not polished) slide.

A little help or not, you can be proud of that one!

Is that hand checkering???

If so, it looks quite good. Nothing looks as good as hand checkering.

Yup, the first checking job I tried doing on my own. It's not perfect, but I'll keep it. You should see it dressed up in ivory. I think I'll have to take some new and better photos :)

Hand checkering shouldn't be perfect. Thats part of the charm. Not to cheapen the machined variety, as I am know it is not trivial, but it just doent belong on a custom gun, IMHO. I like lots and lots of hand work.

Again, very nice.

As with all, I very much like the serrations on the rear of the slide. Nice job.

Well Terry, I'm not gonna claim responsibility for the serrations. I had a little help making them deep enough, well, more than a little help :)
