It’s been a few years since I've had the time to build a pistol for myself. I have always had a soft spot for Pre-Series 70 Colt’s, so this 1969 Government Model followed me home one day. I had planned to build it if I ever found myself with some downtime. After in lingered in the safe for almost a year, I realized that I would have to make time to build it. A weekend project was born...

I had been thinking about how I wanted it to look for months, and I can tell you that the finished pistol is nowhere near my first vision. In addition to other treatments, this pistol features Stan Chen’s Magwell Suite, a Bar-Sto barrel, Cylinder and Slide Ignition, F-22 Carbon Fiber stocks, and a polished IonBond finish. A few more pics and specs on my website.

A special thanks to Ted and Jason getting me off the ground with the nitre bluing process and giving me access to the modded Heinie installation. A HUGE thank you is also due to Stan for helping out with all my dumb questions along the way!

Thanks for looking!

I looked at the first pic and said aloud, "mighty fine".

Second pic, I said the same thing.

Long story short, I said it ten times.

Mighty fine!

LOVE the nitre bluing on the firing pin... You see it on the screws and pins routinely but I think this is the first I've seen with the one extra detail. Very nice, the polished IonBond looks great too.

a polished IonBond finish

I've been looking for a finish that will provide both protection and wear, and am something of a traditionalist who likes a blued, or at least dark, finish. I am NOT a fan of the "painted" looks so prevalent today. I've been researching the Ionbond finish but this is the first reference I've heard of an application that is polished. Can you (or anyone) provide additional information on application, wearability, etc.

As to you .45 - it's been said before, but WOW...

I tried to link two but there are many more examples out there. Use the search feature here and if you have time look over on the Brian Enos forum. Tons of information on both forums about ionbond and who does it. Seeing the below smiths are using this stuff is good enough for me.

Great looking Colt. Great attention to detail and a nice selection of mods without over doing it. The carbon fiber stocks look great with that finsh (non polished).
The nitre blued pins look great with the Ion Bond. I rust things by being in the same room with them. Maybe IonBond can come up with a finish that resembles the nitre that would have the super abilities that the black IonBond does?

gk2410: The neo-retro gun linked to is mine. I have carried it every day for the hot summer months in Arizona and not a speck of corrosion. It really does appear to be the black finish for wear and corrosion. If you were just handed the gun and not told, it is very hard to tell it is not traditional blued.
