Okay guys,

This one has been four years in the making. Don't ask why it took so long. My wife told me I could do anything I wanted for my 50th birthday so I decided to build a retro BBQ gun. Note that I turned 50 in 2004 and I just received the gun today. However, good things are worth waiting for.

Caspian supplied the 1911 frame and slide and the barrel is Bar Sto. The majority of the parts are original 1911, not A-1, parts that I cobbled together from my stash and the help of a few friends, to include Uncle Lou. Uncle Bill from Cylinder & Slide did the build. Ron's Gun Shop did the Carbona blue. They have done the bluing for the Colt Custom Shop and use the original Colt formula. The engraving is from Tim Adlam. I wanted a touch of engraving but not over done. Tim did it just right.

You will note the custom serial number of RLG1954L. RLG are my initials, 1954 is for my birthday year and L is for fifty years. This is an option that anyone can get straight from Caspian.

The stocks are repros from Bill. I hope to get some elephant tooth to put on it for the article.

I picked it up late this afternoon and just had time to snap a few quick pics for the LTW family. If you would like to see this one in person, drop by Bill's booth at SHOT. I think he is going to hijack it from me to show off.

Also look for some custom leather from El Paso Saddlery in the future.

ABSOLUTELY gorgeous! I would change nothing whatsoever on that pistol.
My wife would never say, "Do whatever you want" for any birthday for me........ She would be afraid it would involve HER and not firearms!
Use it in the best of health and for many, many years to come.
Best regards,
Jeffro

Beautiful pistol - Love that bluing!!!

I can't wait to see what you do for your 100th birthday!

BTW, does your wife have any unmarried sisters? LOL

Very nice. Is it really nitre blued overall, or is the color balance on your camera not adjusted for shade?

The blue is carbona, not nitre. I took the photos outside just as sunset so it blew out the color.

Thanks,

Rob

What type/style is the engraving? I like that you didn't cover the entire pistol.

Stay tuned for more photos. Thanks to a very good friend, I have some ivory stocks on the way.

Thanks for the complements. My only issue with the entire pistol is the open space on the left side of the slide. If this were a Colt, it would be covered by the Colt roll marks. I can tell you that if you think having a pistol custom built is hard, having one engraved is even harder. Of course budget plays a part but it is much easier to find examples of what you "don't like" than what you do like. Engravers like Dan Love (who did the slight engraving on my Bowen LW SAA), J. R. French, and Tim Adlam are real masters. It is one thing to buy a pistol that is already engraved. It is a totally different experience to commission the job, find the engraver, choose the pattern, size, and coverage, and then hold your breath and hope that it comes out like it looked on paper.

In the end, it is a worthwhile task. Now for the custom leather to go with it.

Regards,

Rob

This is one helluva cool birthday gift!! The finish work and bluing on this pistol are superb and it has just the right amount of engraving for the style and overall theme of the pistol. Thanks for sharing it! :D

I love it!! In fact, now I know just what you can get me for my 50th birthday!

Seriously though, it's a great gift and very fitting for a first class gentleman like your self... I look forward to seeing this one early next year. :)

I had a Clark Custom built on a Springfield that was Carbonna Blued from Rons. Very high polish, it was the most beautiful pistol I've seen. Darn shame I traded it off. Pistol trading is a disease I have for which there are no cure, only regrets. By the way I've owned and built several customs along with Baer, Wilson and Clark. No one has any better reliability and function than Clark. It was a truly "great" pistol.

Forgive the poor picture and glare. I don't have a light box up and running right now. However, I wanted to shoot a quick photo to show how this gun looks with ivory. I'll have better quality photos later this week.

See a better photo added below.

Thanks Jason!

Back from the range. The C&S Retro ran like a top. The hump and a bump sights were challenging to my fifty plus year old eyes. I also get a little better pic of the ivory. It is very hard to get a balanced picture that will show the ivory and the dark engraving so the ivory is a little hot. I hope to get a better pic in the studio next week.

This one should be at SHOT for those that want to come by and drool

Hey Jason,

I just realized that I didn't receive a birthday gift from you. Weren't you going to send me a best built Commander, or was if a Delta?

By the way, thanks for the help with the loan. It is appreciated.

Rob

Rob I know what you mean, I have one that has been a work in progress for about the last 3 years. The engraver said it should be ready in a couple of weeks, I'm planning on the middle of July. I'm really interested to see if what I described has been transferred to the end product, only time will tell.
