Although it would seem not as ’in demand’ as the Government Model the Browning Hi-Power has remained a popular offering through our shop. Still an extremely viable weapon system, even in stock form the Hi-Power offers a very attractive blending of size, weight, concealability, and of course a healthy payload of ammo. And for those who favor a 9mm there really may be no better platform for a carry gun... but, despite being lauded by many as “Browning’s masterpiece”, the guns aren’t exactly perfect from the factory. Many users find the stock sights too small, the thumb safety less than optimal, the hammer a bit too nippy, and the trigger simply not as useable as the Browning’s other jewel the 1911. But at Heirloom Precision we’ve got a little something that addresses all that and more... the SRT conversion.

Image

Focusing on what you see on the outside... we start with a high-cut front strap that, along with the back strap, is enhanced with our sharkskin stippling...

Image

Image

Image

...toss in a hand-filed beveled mag-well to ease reloads and you‘re on the way.

Image

Next area to address is the trigger job and hammer... along with high-cutting and bobbing the hammer to prevent hammer bite, a C&S sear is tuned to the newly re-cut hammer hooks yielding a very pleasant and useable 4.5 - 5.5# trigger.

Image

Image

Along with additional work to the trigger mechanism, the magazine safety is also removed, the trigger face smoothed and polished, and on this particular gun the a trigger travel reduction was preformed in order to effectively minimize the take-up and reset distances that have often plagued Hi-Power shooters. The trigger being our last physical control over the bullet, this is a modification we feel is one of the most valuable as it gets the Hi-Power trigger the closest it has even been to that familiar feel and action of the 1911 trigger system.

After a complete reliability package that addresses the feed ramp, chamber, breech face, extractor, and ejector a new thumb safety is added to the pistol. Out of all the controls on the Hi-Power the thumb safety is likely the poorest execution. In stock form it can range from oddly shaped and diminutive all the way to far too small to be used effectively. Our answer is the custom thumb safety developed by Ted Yost and offered only through Heirloom Precision...

Image

Image

With the controls now adequately addressed the barrel is re-crowned for enhanced accuracy…

Image

The sights system on the Hi-Power, like the thumb safety, can range in usability and effectiveness. And as part of the SRT conversion the slide top is flattened and serrated and a set of high visibility sights are installed. In this case the sights are our Professional Grade parts with a tritium insert in the front sight.

Image

Image

As a final measure the pistol is thoroughly de-horned in order keep the gun as user friendly as possible over long days of carry or extended sessions at the range. As an effort to keep wear to a minimum this particular pistol was finished in matte hard chrome, an available option to our standard polished blue finish.

Now that is one gorgeous Hi-Power! The hard chrome and the grips make it all business and I don’t know that I could envision a nicer Hi-Power for carry.

Mr. Yost you without question build the best Hi-Powers available today! :D

Those VZ grips are some of the best for the HP I have seen to date. I have to agree with the above statement. That matte chrome with black G-10 stocks is a good lookin set up. Good snaps and write up JB.

Ted you are really getting the hang of those Hi Powers. Great work as always.

Dang Jason! What a rig! I had to break out my SRT and caress it just a little tonight.

You and Theo keep up the great work.

The comment on half power made me laugh. Ted always says that the BHP is the ONLY acceptable launching platform for 9mm.

Best,

Ray

I can't take any credit for the terminology. The first time I heard it was from Dick Thomas, the man that was responsible for the original Columbia Conference, he has several "half" powers and shoot them pretty well.

Oh man, I didn't need to see that!

BTW, that thumb safety looks very, very nice.

Why the hole in the slide below the muzzle?

Drain hole?

Probbably the biggest mistake I've made (gunwise) was to let a Yost HP get away.

I should have bought one of Zak Smiths when it was available. But whatever, I didn't, its in the past, and I have my half power now.

I was lucky enough to pick one of these up this week. Only differences in mine were the blue finish, commander style hammer and beavertail and some nice Spegel grips. I'll have to try and take some pictures later.

I am not really a Hi-Power guy but this thread is causing me to rethink that position.

You never know what you are missing until you own at least one Hi-Power.
I believe the Hi-Power is the best handling, and well balanced 9mm.

I know this is an old thread, but I have had quite a few custom BHP's through my hands, and I have to say that this is what I concider perfect.
