My good friend and ex-partner is retiring this year after 28 years of service. I got him a nice 1911 as a retirement present in the hopes to have a badge inscribed on it with his dates of service. Unfortunately, the engraver said the badge was too intricate to do, so I had to find another way to honor his service.

Conrad Berry of http://www.gungrips.net was my savior. He was able to make me a laser etched set of Alumagrips. I ordered the grips on Wed and had them by Monday. Conrad even phoned me on Saturday to go over some options (like a dumbass, I mistakenly ordered smooth, Conrad figured I wanted checkered and called to verify). If you're looking for custom grips for your 1911, I can't recommend Conrad Berry highly enough.

John, Those are cool! I always thought the LA badge to be the best looking of any I've seen. Years ago, my dad knew a guy who did leather work, and was going to have him tool an LAPD badge on a wallet for him. Fella said after a good look - "too intricate, I can't do it".

John,

I need friends like you and Bailey that give away 1911s to your partners and LTW projects.

Really - That is a very nice gesture and the grips look really cool.

Best,

Ray

Way to go John. I am sure it is nice to get such a gift. Just wondering did you give him the last Yost Signature Grade gun as a retirement present? That would have been my choice. :P

No, I gave him a SA Loaded, which he loves. I am amazed at how well he shoots it. He doesn't have the affinity for 1911s that I do, so I figured a stock gun would suffice, albeit with some bells and whistles (it has the factory beavertail, novaks, and extended thumb safety on a NM frame). He said he had always wanted a 1911, but never got around to buying one. In fact his first gun purchase (last month) was a S&W Model 19 LAPD Commerative I found for him. He had told me he was looking for LAPD memorabilia, as he neglected to buy any of it during his career. He was elated with the 1911 and the grips I gave him. Of course, now that he retired, he decided to go into DROP, so he'll probably be around for a few more years collecting double pay (the lucky bastard).

It would be very cool to have some of your custom wood grips laser engrave like this. The alumagrips are nice, but they don't have the "warmth" and classic looks of wood.

John,

Thanks for the great info about Conrad and his laser etching work. I will definitely look into it and use his expertise in the near future.

Regards,
Jeff

Conrad is a gentleman and a pleasure to work with. I bought a pair of grips inscribed with the Marine Corps eagle, globe and anchor on one side and a full bird Colonel insignia on the other for my future father-in-law and not only did Conrad do an excellent job, he called me to confirm some details and had a 2 day turn around!

John I cant see your picture but I agree that Conrad is a great guy to do business with. I have a couple of sets of grips he did for me with my badge on them. I am very pleased with the product and really think Alumagrips are some of the best grips. Anyway here are two of my babies with Alumagrips, A armory coated SA TRP that is almost stock and a Don Williams worked over SA GI model. The second picture shows the detail that Conrad was able to get on the grips. I know my photography skills aren't that great.

I fixed the problem with the photo of my retired partner's grips. I hope to get some pictures of the Les Carter case I ordered for him soon too. Les says it should be ready in a few more months. I saw some picture of the work in progress and am just totally floored by Les's workmanship as well. Good thing my partner is still working via the DROP program so I can give him his retirement presentation case too

Conrad was nice enough to furnish us with 16 sets of these for our G Man 38 Super Retro Online Class that we are just starting. He is a joy to work with and also helped us with the GSP EX 01 grips we needed for the Shot Show. This is the Badge from the days of Elliot Ness and the Untouchables back in the 1930's.

The engraving on the grips looks great. I can feel the wheels slowly start to turn. . .
