Another Single Stack Classic (now a USPSA National) has come and gone, and I’m happy to report that it was yet another extremely fun, well run and well designed test of shooting skill. Hats off to Bill Davis, Russell Cluver, all the RO’s, volunteers and some unknown gunsmith match director  , for a job well done!

The new Single Stack division in USPSA has once again given the beloved classic fighting 1911 a home in IPSC style shooting. As Rob Leatham put it during the awards ceremony, “this match is old school IPSC…..”

This year I had the pleasure of building one of the prize pistols for the match. Springfield Armory, as match sponsors, provided the base pistols for the prize guns to be built on; their generous support of the match and the shooting sports in general is a shining example in the industry that we are very grateful for. Also thanks to Barsto for providing stainless match barrels for the builds.

As I started the build, it immediately struck me that the build should be rather “classic” in nature in keeping with the traditional nature of the match and new division. So there would be no flames, racing stripes, slots, holes, or skeletons. The theme of this pistol would be elegant simplicity, yet with hopefully a distinctive imprint of the builder upon the pistol. The finish is a satin blue, with metal prep done by me and the final blue dip done by the incomparable Glenrock Blue. Enjoy!

If there’s interest, I may be able to dig up some close ups of the pistol. Otherwise, I hope to see you at a match sometime. The new USPSA Single Stack division has gotten my competitive shooting juices flowing again! :D

Stan- that is a beauty, looks even better now that Phil and Doug dipped it. Classic elegance, I think this gun nails it. The progressive checkering is even nicer in person, I really like the way it feels in the hand...great idea and execution! It also adds "a distinctive imprint of the builder upon the pistol."

Nice
Mark

We talked about your gun. A lot.

That pretty much says it all

Stan,

I think everyone has summed it up already. Just plain classy.

But, methinks your photography is every bit as good or better than anything I've ever seen.

Give us more, oh great one.

That front strap really, really works..... in both the the "gripping" and the "looking" departments!

Beee-yootiful Stan!

The taker of this gun had an immediate offer to buy it-- which he wisely declined without a second's thought!

Mr. Chen....That gun works. Very nice. I have personally always liked a gun that looks that simple and elegant. One of the things I dont think people realize, is how hard you have to work to make all the surfaces, flats and curves, look good. even without some cosmetic treatment, it takes a lot of surface treatment to make a gun look that "clean".
Having been around a little bit, I firmly believe that that is what seperates the truly great from the merely very good. It 's very hard on a 1911 to be different in your work without being "tacky", and that frontstrap is classy. Very elegant gun. Having been out of the business for a number of years it sure would be nice to re learn some things from you guys.
You and Mr Brian ever wanna get down to the NM area I would Gladly host. Once again...veeeery nice gun. Chuck

p.s. would a burger limit be innappropriate?

Stan - DUDE................. That is definitely a beauty. Everything works together just like it oughta. And guys I saw this progressive traction checkering "in the flesh" at the SHOT Show and it's even cooler than it looks in the pictures. Now, if he also did the top of the slide like he did on the SHOT gun, you'll be even more impressed.

...and you told me at the match that you did something "simple." I believe my response was "Simple and Chen don't fit in the same sentence"

I must say, stunning, stylish, and elegant - I don't see simple there.

Take care Stan, I can't wait to have another chance to say hi again.

OK, that's just WRONG Ted!

Chuck W., thanks for your very insightful feedback, it really means a lot coming from you. I have to admit it feels great when someone notices and acknowledges what it really takes to produce a certain type of work. Thanks also for the invite to come down, that is very gracious and it would be a real treat...maybe someday when life slows down a bit....

Thanks again everyone for the kind comments, I'll work on getting some more pics and details up.... :D

Thanks again guys for all the interest…here’s a few more photos and a little more detail. Let me just highlight some key items of interest on the outside of the gun. We’ll save the lengthy discussion on what we do inside the gun for another time…

Grip Safety
World class beavertail fits require a different approach on Springfield pistols due to the dimensions of Springfield frame tangs, which do not leave enough material to properly blend a traditional hi sweep type grip safety. Most often, gunsmiths use smaller radius grip safeties to compensate. Rather than deviate from what is a “Chen” grip safety fit, I chose to build up the rear of the frame by TIG welding (as in my foot on the pedal and my hands holding the torch and rod) and laying in very fine beads of weld with tool steel filler rod. The frame is then remachined back to proper dimensions so the fitting can begin.

Remember, this is a satin blue finish, which will not hide discoloration or flaws due to welding, as a painted/coated finish would. By playing very close attention to the many elements of fine TIG welding, I am able to weld up the tangs and fit the traditional high sweep type grip safety on a .250 radius with no evidence of excessive heat, porosity, or discoloration. From the outside, it is virtually impossible to tell, even under magnification, that any welding occurred. The end result is that I am able to precisely fit the grip safety to my own standards and style.

Image

Of course the thumb safety is not neglected, and it is blended by hand to not only be comfortable to the hand, but also blend gracefully with the lines of the frame.

Progressive Traction Checkering â„¢
This pistol features the latest evolution of my exclusive Progressive Traction Checkering â„¢. As the name implies, this series of textures are specifically designed to give the 1911 shooter a degree of traction which is proportional to the amount of grip force applied. In other words, if the shooter takes a solid grip on the gun, he is firmly locked into it for superb recoil control. Loosen the grip, and the pistol slides easily in the hand, should a grip adjustment be needed during a draw or a reload.

This latest version features a series of small raised ridges which cross in the middle of the frontstrap to form an X pattern. The ridges serve to give even more directional, progressive control in 4 axes to give the shooter greater control of the pistol without being overly sharp or abrasive.

Image

Magwell
In the above photo you’ll also notice the enlarged magwell opening, seamlessly cut into the mainspring housing as far to the rear as possible for reliably fast reloads. This is done using the specialized Chen Mainspring Housing and has become “de rigueur” on all my custom builds. Astute pistoleros know that the rear of the mag well is the definite sweet spot during the reload, as it greatly reduces the degree to which you have to “rock” the magazine into the mag well. By the time you’ve indexed the back of your magazine with the back of the mag well, the bullet nose has already cleared the front lip of the mag well, and you’re in!

The Pro Trac Checkeringâ„¢ on the rear is cut integral with the frame, to provide even greater tractioned surface area, as well as a unique, distinctive appearance.

Image

Slide Top
Back to the more traditional side of our theme, the top of the slide is flattened and fine lined at an elegant 40 lpi. The front sight is scratch made in house and blended to gracefully match the slide radius for a clean appearance. A fine cut border sets off the slide flats from the rounds. The bushing is countersunk and polished. The barrel is cut flush with the bushing countersink, then precision crowned and polished.

Image

Finish
The entire pistol is detailed, with lines straightened and external metal surfaces polished to a fine grit finish by hand. Then, the satin finish is applied with fine blasting media. Finally, the parts are dipped in the bluing tanks by Phil Filing at Glenrock Blue. Thick paint coatings can hide flaws in the metal; the type of satin finish done on this pistol is very unforgiving. Especially on the elbows! :(

Since many people have inquired, here's the scoop on my waiting list.....it will open up in some capacity towards the end of the year.

Thanks again everyone, see you at the range…..! :D
