One thing you are going to want to do on that TI frame is send it to Tripp for carbonization on the rails when you are done with the frame and slide fit. This will help with the reliability of the funcion without having to keep the gun dripping in oil. It impregnates the rails with tungsten to give it a bearing surface that isn't so 'gummy.'

As far as finishes, you are left with the typical "spray and bake" options like Birdsong Black T or Cerrakote....etc. I haven't talked to IonBond about TI, but I would think it wouldn't matter if they can do Aluminum, Steel, and/or Stainless.

Here are a couple pictures of one TI gun I did.

I might be mistaken, but I believe Mr. Virgil Tripp is now devoting all his efforts toward the production of 1911 and AR15 magazines.

His website clearly indicates his firm is no longer doing finish work.

Whether this includes the Ti-alloy 'carbonization' process is rather less clear, but unfortunately, it seems most likely that work has also been abandoned.

Actually I think the correct term is "carbidizing" and it's basically sputtering tungsten carbide onto the frame and slide rails. I had Tripp do mine and it works very well. Caspian Arms will also do the carbidizing.

I just checked out Caspian's web site and it is included with the ti frame at no charge :) Does anyone know if ti can be hard chromed?
Thanks all

I don't think you can hard chrome anything that's not steel. You can apply Ionbond or any other PVD (physical vapor deposition) finish to a non steel metal.

No, but Armaloy bonds to non-ferrous metals. Whether that includes Ti or not, you'll have to ask them.

I had been wondering about Ti coating as well. Armaloy is out or at leat not recommended....

http://www.armoloyil.com/FAQ.htm

What types of materials can be coated?
Nearly all ferrous and non-ferrous metals can be coated, including common molding steels such as H-13, S-7, P-20, 420SS, A-2, D-2, and copper alloys such as Moldmax and Ampcoloy.

Titanium, zinc, and magnesium are not recommended for Armoloy coating.

I have a Ti commander being built. I had it accu-railed before I knew about the "carbidizing" process.

I also called one of the outfits that finishes with IonBond and was told that Ti is no problem.

From what I've heard, Ionbond will even stick to politicians, insurance salesmen and Circuit City warranties.

OK Pros

How would you finish a Ti lower if your customer wanted a two tone look. We as buyers have a choice or do we just go black if we want the benefit of Ti?

Thanks in advance :)
