In the scramble to get everything squared away so I could leave for the SHOT Show, I didn't have time to photograph this pistol and post the pics. I intended to get this done as soon as I returned, but a case of bronchitis got in the way until now. I'm very pleased with the way it turned out - especially because it's mine!
This pistol started out with a visit last winter to the gun shop and indoor range where I do most of my test firing. The owner told me that he had an old Colt that I might want for parts or a project and showed me one of the most ragged Combat Commanders that I've seen. It had been living underneath someone's pickup truck seat and had turned into a big mess of dents and rust pits. The owner of the gun store pushed the right buttons and I took it home with me (read - he sold it to me really cheap and told me he didn't think I could do much with it, bringing both my wallet and ego into play).
I took it apart to see if there was anything cracked broken or mashed that was of any importance and was pleased to see all was adequately solid inside the beast. I decided that since the exterior was so pitted that I'd better clean up the exterior before I went too far. I filed and sanded the slide flats down until they were clean of pitting and sent the slide out to have the roll marks restored on both sides. Then it sat for a few months waiting time and motivation to take it the rest of the way.
It had some dents in the top of the slide that had to be welded up and dressed down. After that was out of the way, it looked like I had a solid starting point to build on. Of course, I had enough time in it by now that my "good deal" was up to the cost of just buying a clean base gun. I finished it off as follows:
Welded and re-machined slide to frame fit
Kart barrel -w- EGW bushing
Hand checkered spring plug made from long nose EGW plug
Ball cuts and 40 lpi serrated flat top -w- radiused borders
Yost Pro Grade sights reshaped a bit
French Borders, lowered & fluted ejection port and lower slide bevels
Rear of slide serrated 50 lpi
C&S ignition set -w- H-D Hard Use trigger
Ed Brown thumb safety & CMC beavertail
Legacy MaxRamp MSH checkered 25 lpi & RoundButted
Front strap trued, high gripped and checkered 25 lpi
Heinie mag well welded on
Hand made Cocobolo grips -w- indexed narrow slot grip screws
