Hello everyone. This may be my first post but I have been lurking for quite a while.

To my question.

I recently bought a slightly used Colt Special Combat .45acp Tow-Tone. I bought it as an interesting base gun. In addition to the regular reliability upgrades, what would your ideas be? My current thought is as follows.

Cerakote entire pistol black.
Heinie magwell or something similar
Replace Adjust. rear sight with fixed unit
Scallop or Golf ball frontstrap/MSH
Braze plunger tube

Upgrade parts as required.

This may be an occasional carry gun FYI...

Thanks,
Wally

Wally, Some of the changes you mention are certainly do-able, and the choice of magwell is going to eventually come down to either one that extends the grip of the gun, such as an S&A unit, or one that require shortening of the frame, such as the Heinie, the excellent one now offered by Stan Chen, or the Morris. Both types have their pluses and minuses.

You may have a problem with the adjustable sight in converting it to a fixed combat style, as I don't know of anyone that makes one currently. With a few measurements and some brainstorming, a unit used to replace another style of adjustable may be adaptable though.

Both the scallops and Chucks golfball finish do a very good job of making what can be a slippery finish into one that won't move around on you.

I don't have any personal experience with Cerakote, so can't comment on that finish, but there are a number of finishes available now which will enable you to get an all black Colt.

Best regards

The Special Combat uses a Bo-Mar sight and I believe that John Harrison makes a fixed sight that fits that cut.
