Well, that's not 100% true as the beavertail and slide stop need to be sandblasted and re-parked, but other than that, I have finally finished the pistol from my Vickers Course back in October.

Many thanks to Dave Erickson at Condition 1 Pistolsmithing for chamfering the slide stop hole and for ALL of the invaluable assistance and generosity yesterday while I parked this at his place!!! If you are considering having someone build you a 1911, Dave is a very good person to consider!

Now for the pics:

Finish, for now, is Zinc Parkerizing. Once I'm gainfully employed again, I'll probably have it ion bonded.

Frame/Slide is Caspian with a Kart barrel. All were hard fit during the class.

Hammer, sear, strut and disconnector are Vickers parts. Can't imagine using any other parts again after using these.

Rear sight is 10-8 while the front is a Novak blank hand filed to height and shape.

Trigger is a Greider long.

Magwell is a Smith & Alexander with the MSH pin hole in the typical wrong location. At some point I will either have the hole plugged and redrilled or I'll order a new S& A magwell with the pin hole NOT drilled.

Definitely an experience putting this thing together and performing the final massaging to get it to where I was ready to finish it. Those of you scheduled to take the course later this year will NOT be disappointed.

WOW! Well done!

How do you like the 10-8 sights? Do they have any cons compared to a square notch? Is it a proprietary dovetail cut or a Novak cut?

What lpi is the checkering on the MSH? It looks great!

What else can you tell us about Larry's parts?

Lucky You!

What am I missing? The hole looks to be where the hole should be.

He is referring to the gap between the magwell and the frame. S&A Magwells seem to have the MSH pin hole cut a little high leaving a gap between the frame and mag well once installed on most guns (tolerance issues to fit a wide variety of frames). It can be minimized with very careful upward bending of the sides of the magwell.

Nice job :)

I like that touch on the sides of the magwell.

Thanks!

I really like the 10-8 sights. I had tried the Yost sights on my Springfield and liked them, but tried the 10-8s, which are very similar, and I found that the 10-8 notch more to my liking. Seems less "distracting", if you will.

The checkering is the factory S&A 20lpi that was cleaned up by hand with a checkering file.

Larry, in conjunction with Blue Force Gear, is putting out a set of hammer, sear, disconnector and strut. They are the best finished parts that I've seen so far. I also really like how the hammer comes pre beveled. The strut I used originally looked like it had been punched out of sheet stock which left an uneven end in the hammer and a very roughly finished end in the MSH. The Vickers strut is very cleanly machined needing only minor touch up on the sides of it to remove the machining marks. No other work was really necessary.

As for the S&A Magwell, as noted above, the MSH pin hole on them tends to be drilled a bit high which results in a gap that needs to be addressed. I know Chuck Rogers has shown steps to address this by silver soldering in a pin then redrilling the hole. At some point I'll probably just order a new one from S&A that is undrilled and drill it myself or have someone mill it for me.

The idea for the contouring of the magwell is something I borrowed from Larry, who I believe borrowed the idea from someone else. I know Hilton Yam performs similar work on his guns as does Chuck Rogers, IIRC.

I'll try to get a few better pics as I'd really like some feedback from some of the guys who do this for a living.

Thanks!

Giff
