I had a slide assembly for one of my Government model 1911's made where a Commander slide was used and a full profile comp was fabricated / installed so it would have the profile of a full size Government.

A longer barrel was fit and threaded and the comp was fabricated and profiled to match the profile of the slide. It was then threaded and installed. I believe the comp was silver soldered to the barrel.

I believe most smiths either silver solder the comp onto the barrel or use some type of epoxy.

Just an educated guess here, but I suspect it's threaded on and secured with a set screw. Since a Hi-Power barrel has to be removed from the bottom of the slide, there would be no other practical way to remove the barrel and comp for cleaning. Best,

The compensator narrows who would be interested in buying the gun or number of bids if sold at an auction.

I would agree and say that would lower the value in my book. Unless the work is done by a name smith, any work really doesn't add to the value and may detract. It looks to me like you may need a whole new top end if you ever wanted to change it. Personal preference, but never really wanted a compensated 9MM. They are soft kicking enough on their own.

To put it into perspective, I just bought a brand new Practical (factory 2 tone/hard chrome framed hi power) for $550 from a Gander Mountain. That was a smoking good deal though.

Again a personal thing, but if I did want such a hi power, I would look to get that a couple hundred cheaper than they are asking.

The high Powers I have seen with a compensator have a barrel that extends past the slide. I have never seen someone cut the slide like that. My first question would be what Smith did the work, as the value of a custom gun relates heavily to who did the job.

I wish i knew who did the work,it does have a c stamped into the trigger guard on the left side and some sort of crown on the right side. The smith did a flawless job on the compensator installation and the trigger is sweet! I now own it and still have no idea how the compensator is on if its threaded it is not pinned.I will be shooting it this weekend and post better pics and range report,Thanks :)
