By some small chance of luck the forces of nature aligned and I managed to gather a small group of Hi-Powers together long enough to take a few pictures. The Hi-Power continues to be a popular pistol at our shop and the “ammo crisis” of this last year seemed to give a boost to that popularity, at least from our perspective. Despite this popularity it’s not often that we can manage to get one Hi-Power to set still long enough for me to do photos, let alone four... somebody must have been looking out for me this day.

No matter what many folks might say, in my mind there is no doubt why the Browning Hi-Power remains a smart choice for those seeking a 9mm platform. The Hi-Power is very efficient at what it does and given the right modifications and proper tuning it will do just about everything the 1911 will do, save launching .45 caliber bullets down range.

The guns pictured here show that the Hi-Power platform offers a host of options that can provide for anyone’s preference whether it be a gun with sharkskin stippling and a properly trimmed hammer or one that features a weld-on beavertail and hand-cut checkering front and rear. A good set of sights and a thumb safety that’s actually useable make the package even better and when you add in our trigger travel reduction and a durable finish to either format and you’ve got yourself a fighting handgun that can meet any challenge over the long haul.

Whether it be a full-house gun or a more simplistic using piece the P35 remains a very concealable and shootable platform that can yield a very workable single action trigger and holds a bunch of bullets to boot! It’s like a friend of mine once said, “Yup 9mm, lots of 9mm!“ Enjoy the pictures!

Great work Ted & Jason! Everyone of the P35 are outstanding...simply amazing work!

I recently picked up a NIB MK II specifically for a full house build, thanks for the inspiration!

Those safeties are what the BHP's safety shoulda been all along. Nice gaggle of 9's.

Thanks, Nedly - The safety is one of the most time consuming parts of the build, but it's probably as important to the overall picture as anything else I do on the gun. Some people complain about getting bit, some don't like the trigger reset (although I can deal with that , too), and some don't like the little bitty bullets (one thing I can't fix  ), but EVERYONE hates the factory safeties, and most of the aftermarket offerings.

Ted-

The safety you build for HPs is a huge improvement. Having shot HPs with factory and most aftermarkets, your is as good as it gets! Nice work, I know the owners will be happy..I am. Great pic of some great guns too!

As usual, I'll visit a post like this one a few times over as many days. And, I'll notice something different each time...

I'm not sure what it is about the HP, but stippling just "looks" right. Even so, Ted's extree fine checkering on the BHP is the bees knees! I didn't notice on the first few ganders, but the lower pistol in the first pic is so equipped. As we say here in Texas, "Finer than frog's hair split four ways."

From these and other photos I've seen here, it appeas that the HP/HP thumb safety is (still?) evolving. In this case, the photos clearly show that all four safeties were treated differently.

I would guess this has to do with the differing build levels. However, what appears (to me) to be the "best-shaped" thumb safety is not mounted on what would seem to be the highest grade gun.

Specifically, the safety on the blued pistol looks like it would be the most "thumb-friendly." In particular, the area around the base of the lever appears to be the smoothest and most streamlined of these four (possibly the thinnest as well, but the photos don't show this).

Anyway, if the choice were mine, I would pick a thumb safety like the one shown on the blued pistol (or another with no sharp edges/corners or excess material at/around the base of the lever).

I believe that is because each thumb safety is hand made using the existing factory safety as the base. Different generation thumb safety equals a different finished product. At any rate each thumb safety pictured is allot better than any aftermarket produced safety out there. Also I like the Heirloom Precision thumb safety better than any other Smith built safety that I have seen or used. It amazes me how much the custom HiPower is still evolving after all these years. Used to be a Wickman HiPower was the coveted Custom BHP, I believe the boy's at Heirloom Precision have raised the bar. Case in point would be the reset/over travel modification devised by Ted. More interesting is that nobody to my knowledge has copied his design.

That would certainly explain it. Somehow, I got the impression the (um, basic? - not sure what else to call it) HP-HP thumb safety was a 'production' item. I see now I was mistaken.

So these are made from "scratch" (more or less)? I am duly impressed. I was unaware anyone was doing that type of thing these days (crafting custom small parts, one-at-a-time).

I love the sweeping thumb safety. High Powers are becoming a LOST ART :(
