Anyone ever customize the older series 80 Enhanced Gold Cups? I've hear the rear sight is pretty fragile and he's not a fan of the beavertail (no it's not mine). I'm sure he'll keep it stock, but just thought I'd toss it out there. His looks like this Delta GC:

Any pix?

I asked Jason Burton about this awhile ago ahen I saw one for a steal. I think those rear sights give some of the smiths the heebee jeebees. He talked me out of it and now I have a nice older series 70.

As mentioned, the sights definitely have to go, but I've done quite a few Gold Cups over the years with good results.

How about some Gold Cup pix?!

What exactly is the problem with the rear sight? Any other "issues" to be on the lookout for?

The Elliason rear sight is held in place with a 1/16" pin in a hole that sits cross ways of the slide's travel. It's turned exactly wrong to live with the shear force in play. The cut in the slide is way too long front to back to use any of the popular 1911 sights like BoMar, Heinie, Novak and fill that original cut all the way forward. Your option is to fill the cut with weld or silver solder in a filler. Wilson makes a special Gold Cup sight as does Wichita, but they both are big honking sights. That's whats wrong with the sight.

The front strap is factory serrated at something in the 20 lpi range. About all you can do with that is to hand checker the rest of it 20 lpi, or weld in an EGW front strap insert. The trigger is extra wide and made of steel, so it's at least 3 times heavier than it needs to be to not have a trigger bounce problem. EGW is the only company I know of making a trigger for it and theirs is a "blank".

Those three things make the Gold Cup an undesirable candidate for a base gun. Not an impossible one, but there are too many things to work around to want to seek out a Gold Cup for a base.

And let's not forget about the internal slide lightening.
There were two variants of this used on the Gold Cups I think.
This 'can' lead to premature slide failure.

CT Brian worked on my Gold Cup and installed Wichita Sights and they looked good to me. They are a little large but the Gold Cup is not my carry pistol... Here are the pictures (they are not the greatest but the best I could do with my cheap camera and poor lighting).

The work he performed on my Gold Cup is a joy to behold. For this particular gun he had to install Kreiger Rails due to the poor slide to frame fite.

That last one isn't too far off from mine. This is a series 70 done by a smith out of Houston who basically turned a govt model into that.
