Since the reintroduction of the stainless steel Colt Delta Elite we’ve had a few of these guns come through the shop for various conversions. I just recently finished a two-tone Best Grade gun built on one of these new Deltas and it reminded me of the Retro gun Ted had done late last year.

Image

Like the Panerai pictured with the gun, this Retro conversion Delta Elite represents contemporary technology molded into a classic style. The gun combines the best of what’s available today blended into Retro gun that would easily be a welcomed companion comfortably at home in an original Nelson Summer Special.

The Retro touches are easy to see... from the Classic Ramped Gold Line front sight and HP Retro rear sight, to the ball-cut slide, traditionally styled Commander hammer and thumb safety, to the custom Heirloom Precision Retro beavertail, and custom domed mainspring housing with lanyard loop. These classily styled modifications help give the gun a distinctive look that that just oozes Retro.

The contemporary side of things comes in the form of better quality parts and manufacturing methods. The quality of aftermarket parts and the advancements in building techniques help us not only build guns more efficiently but also to an elevated level of durability, detail, and longevity. On this gun these advancements can be seen in techniques such as weld-up frame and slide fits and line straightening and also via parts like Wilson Bulletproof extractors and slide stops, oversized firing pin stops and barrel bushings from EGW, Schuemann barrels, bar-stock plunger tubes, and G10 and micarta stocks from VZ Grips. These things are certainly considered the standard for today’s guns but when compared to the custom 1911s of the ‘70s it’s like night and day.

When carefully blended with tried and true building techniques and processes, this persistent evolution of parts technology and mechanical know-how helps the guns continue to get better and better. Enjoy the pictures!

Fabulous! Interesting MS housing treatment. Reminds me of late 60s, early 70s style mods. I think Wayne Novak did some that way, too.

I can't imagine why you'd have replaced the stock black plastic trigger!

Schweet looking pistol, sir. I too, like the MSH arrangement. I like the grip safety even better.
Very nice work!

Beautiful conversion on the Delta and beautiful Pam. I love 10MMs and the 104s.

That is a fine pistol, and I really like your Beavertail treatment.

Now that is my idea of the perfect back country gun. Rust resistant finish, classic lines and a heavy hitting round. Oh, and it's a fine looking gun to boot. Nice work on that one, I really do wish it was mine.

That is quite a beauty to say the least.

Does VZ sell the DE grips or do you buy the VZ grips and install the DE medallion?

Thanks.

Chris

Chris, I set those medallions here. I only wish John offered them!

As a long time student of the custom 1911 world, I love to see retro guns. Recognizing the efforts and innovations of previous talents is a fantastic way for the Pistolsmiths today to pay tribute to the fathers of the industry. The 'Domed' MSH seen here is obviously a tribute to Armand Swenson, even thought it is executed in finer fashion than any original examples I've seen done by Swenson himself.

It's great to see how far the industry has come, and even better when we see it still has connections to generations past. It sickatates(tm) me to see flagrant plagiarism between the professionals today and some of the gun plumbers out there, but retro guns really are a tribute to the innovators of yesterday.

Fantastic photographs. A close friend wears a Panerai chrono- I was surprised to see one in your shots as they are pretty uncommon watches.

Long live the 10mm!
