Here are some pics of a Colt Commander that I finished recently. I had a pretty loose slide to frame fit, so I started off with a set of Acc-U-Rails to tighten things up and give it a steel on steel bearing surface. Next came a Kart barrel with my HD logo bushing and spring plug to get the foundation solid. The top of the slide was flattened and serrated 40 lpi and a Heinie Ultra Low Mount rear sight was fitted. The front sight is an SDM blank with the dovetail ends shaped to match the slide's radius. After profiling, it was serrated 50 lpi and drilled for a tritium lamp. The rear of the slide was serrated 40 lpi to match the sight and the ejection port was lowered and fluted and shaped for live round ejection. Ball cuts on the spring tunnel and French borders completed the work to the slide.

The frame was checkered 30 lpi with top and bottom borders after being trued and high-gripped. The VZ aluminum main spring housing was checkered to match the front strap after being shaped into a RoundButt. The mag well was machine beveled at 60 degrees, then hand finished. A CMC beavertail was fitted to a hair line joint, swinging on an Ed Brown wide thumb safety, which I reshaped to a medium CarryContour. The slide stop is an EGW barstock unit, serrated on the underside at 40 lpi and features a countersunk pin. A steel feed ramp insert was fitted to allow use of any bullet nose design. All parts were treated with my Carry Bevel package for comfortable carry and handling. The custom made stocks are Claro Walnut and are secured with indexed HD narrow slot grip screws. The plunger tube and extended mag catch are bar stock Harrison Design parts. Ignition is handles by a short, smooth HD trigger along with my Extreme Service ignition set. The finish is Type III hard coat anodizing on the frame and MSH and IonBond DLC on all of the steel parts. The slide flats are polished to 600 grit.

Now for some pics-

Now THAT's a Commander I would be proud to carry and show off at the local BBQ.

The owner will be very happy. I'm jealous...

Nice work John

John, Nice looking Colt Commander. I enjoy looking at those fine details.

Nothing like a Colt with a few upgrades. :)

I always love the way you mesh beauty with business on your pistols Mr. Harrison. Awesome indeed.

does it make sense to do any non destructive inspection on a alloy frame before spending a lot of money on custom work or is a visual inspection usually enough?

That front sight practically disappears in the slide! Accurails should allow that aluminum frame to last a very long time, good application.
