The mailman brought a really special gift today. Pat Sweeney's new book is out, and it's a master stroke of things 1911! Well written and organized, with thoughtful and detailed text. And then there's the photography - Absolutely First Class, Captain's table, front to back!

I've got lots of gun books - by guys like Whelen, Rule, Madis, Roosevelt, even Cooper - This book belongs with the best.

Well done, Pat! Thank you for your efforts.

Just got mine today from Amazon. To say that it was well worth the price would be a gross understatement. A "must have" for the pattern 1911 enthusiast, historian, and (especially) shooter. Great pictures that I have never seen before. I can't wait to spend a few good chunks of time with it.

Great job, Patrick. Thanks for the hard work.

It was nice to see that Barnes & Nobles put it up front and center in the gun section!

Not to be a tease (OK, I'm a major tease) but when i delivered the manuscript I had mis-remembered the contract. I delivered half again as much as they were planning to print.

So, when the 2nd Edition comes out in a few years, there will be (In the words of Billy Idol) "More, more more"

And let me tell you, handling 1911s that were literal one-of-a-kind or rarities less common than an honest Congressman, was a real thrill.

There is a lot to say about Sweeney. I hesitate to write it all for a variety of reasons... among them, the fact that Patrick has mentioned me a few times in articles and books. So the first thing is the "full disclosure".

I've known Patrick for a long time. I first met him at the Second Chance bowling pin shoot. He was part of a group of East-side (MI) shooters and it was hard not to notice the tall one making me struggle to stay near the top of the standings in some of the optional events (which could be attempted several times during the week long shoot; shoot the fastest time today and tomorrow you may end up 10th fastest-- go and shoot it again!). The last year for the shoot was 1998, about the time ( I think) Patrick was getting into gun-writing full time.

A couple years later I started working several weeks in the summer for an IL police training outfit that is part of the state government. Sweeney had already been doing it for a couple years at the time, so since about 2000, we have got to know each other better and become friends. So, yeah..... we know each other. But most importantly, before I go on-- one of the things I most admire about him in his current position as Handguns Editor for Guns & Ammo and author of many books, is that he has never sought to gain from his position by having me do gun work "for consideration". What I'm telling you here is that Sweeney pays here at my shop, same as everyone else, and he waits, too! The Ti 9mm I built for him several years ago, when he sent it back for an afternoon's work about two years ago, well, he didn't get it back for about 9 months......

I've seen Patrick discussed a few times on the net where guys were wondering if he's just another gun writer. Nope! If you like Patrick's work with a keyboard, believe me, he's even better with a gun-- any gun. He is a real, true shooter, and if whatever he's shooting is not working right, he can fix it. You don't hear much about it, but he is and has been part of the USPSA team that attends the bi-annual IPSC World Shoot. It is hard to match him in gun trivia or history, but he's not one-dimensional either; he is extremely well traveled and well read.

I like to joke that he has the keys to the executive washrooms in just about every gun and ammo manufacturer in the country-- and many elsewhere. He's toured armsmakers' facilities and arms museums from Finland to Belgium to Italy and all points in between, to bring the high points back to us in his writings.

So-- he's not a guy who is kinda into guns and figured out he could see his name in print make a few bucks by jotting down what happened in an afternoon at the range. He's a technically-minded gun historian who can shoot!

Mine arrived sometime this afternoon and I just finished the first of what I'm sure will be several dozen passes through the book. LOTS o' 1911 goodness here. Plenty of "other" pistols, too.

Good stuff!

I had to order it at my B&N since I live in the "Peoples Republic" all the gun books/mags have a brown wrapper and are kept under the counter. Should have it Monday.

Greg, if your copy shows up with all the gun pics blacked out and the word "gun" removed, let us know...... we'll get you a "CA bootleg" copy!

A very well done book, Patrick! Congratulations!

I had a suspicion that if I was mentioned, our, umm, discussions about Hi Power cuts would be in play. I wasn't disappointed.

Too good to leave out.

Ned, I'm blushing. Well, OK, I'm not, but assuming you outlast me, can I get you to speak at my viewing?

Received mine through Amazon and my already high expectations were exceeded. I must say though, it wasn't at my local Barnes and Nobles (maybe has to do with location... bay area, CA).

Surprisingly few Borders here in NoVA had it in stock, but finally tracked down the last copy in Sterling, and man, was all that driving worth it. I only skimmed through the photos, but they alone are worth the very fair price for the book. Echo the other comments here...if you're into the 1911, it is a must-have for your library.

Thanks Pat

The book arrived today and I'm looking for a new pair of white cotton gloves before handling it.

I'll be watching for the 2nd edition...

Thanks Again...

I just received my copy, apparently it was sitting at the post office for a while....

WOW. This is a seriously nice book...great job Patrick! I can't wait to really sit down and read it in detail. I'm sure I'll be learning more about this pistol that I spend my life carving up.

I'm actually a little shocked at the price...I would have expected 2-3X at a minimum. This is a MUST have for any 1911 fan.

I was surprised at the price, too. But they assure me that I'll be able to retire to Vanuatu on volume.....

$30 is a magic number for a number of publishers, they hate to go over $30.

I did get my book after ordering it at Barnes&Noble yesterday. The joy of unwrapping the plain brown wrapper, in front of the cashier whose eyes popped a few millimeters after seeing a "weapon" on the cover. He did not make eye contact after that point, taking my cash causiously off the counter.Probably headed straight to the lav for a hand washing. Ahh, Massachusetts wimps.

I recieved my copy yesterday. This book is wonderful. The historical info on the military trials is really fascinating. I am now a big fan of Mr. Sweeney's writing. This book is also filled with enough pictures to drive any firearms fan crazy with desire. Kinda like the Sears catalog used to be when we were kids. I really cannot say enough positive things. This book is next to my easy chair, and I will continue reading shortly. Thak you VERY much Mr. Sweeney for all of your hard work. I am sure that handling all of those rare and beautiful pistols was difficult and time consuming. You have my sympathy. Thankyou again.
