This one came up in a previous post so I thought I would post some details. It is my daily carry and has been since I bought it from another member last year. Thanks Mike!

1951 Commander Super 38
Barsto BBL with Chucks crown treatment and NM bushing.
SS feed ramp insert.
Ball cut slide and checkered front strap at 25 LPI
Metalife HC
I changed the Novak plain rear to a YoBo Pro tritium and put some Elephant ivory slim lines from Jim @ Nutmeg sports.
The rest you can see.
It is showing a few marks from daily carry.

Perfect carry gun. I like it a lot! I'd like to get my hands on one like it.

Beautiful. Once my build from Steve Morrison at MARS Armament gets here I will be in search for my next project. I think a 38 super commander might just be what the doctor ordered.

Beautifully Done Classic Colt!

I have a 1951 LW Commander in 45 ACP, any problems with the Metalife finish on the aluminum frame?
Regards,
John

No issues I have detected. Looks the same and seems to be holding up as well as the carbon slide. I just sent a LW OACP receiver and a 55 Commander receiver from another super 38 Commander to Mahovksy's for Metalife treatment. I have been very happy with their work.

Gary-if that were my pistol it would get carried a lot ... and fired a lot! :D

That's a very restrained and traditional piece for a custom by CR.

Aside from the legal issues, it would take little provocation for me to pull that baby outta the holster!!

Gary,

That is a super fine looking classic carry piece, with all the signature Rogers' attention to detail. I would count myself blessed to carry one of Chuck's guns on a daily basis. And a Super no less! :D

Gary,

Just curious how you keep the stock-screws shiney-blue/black like that, on a daily carry-gun in Oklahoma?

Everything I've tried so far in Missouri leaves blued stock-screws a dusty orange, after a sweaty afternoon in an IWB holster.

I've been considering Rennaissance Wax for the blued bits on my BBQ Gun...

screws were about 2 days old when the picture was taken.

I dont think the humidity is quite as bad here as Miss. I am pretty much a desk jockey these days so I dont have too many issues with rust.

I don't know that it's the "ambient humidity" causing issues, so much as the humidity surrounding my IWB holster...

Perhaps I should look into Diamond-Like Coating (DLC) for the stock-screws. Know anyone who's tried that?

I really like the YoBo rear sight profile. I understand it is now made by Harrison design.

WOWZA!!!

Now THAT is one GORGEOUS pistola!! I LOVE IT!

I wasn't sure about that ivory on a stainless pistol, but now that I look at it more it really is beautiful. I think the medallions also add to the great looks.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks. Actually it is hard chromed Carbon and alloy. Colt didnt start making Stainless 1911s for a few years after this one was made. But I appreciate the compliments. I prefer medallions in my grips. Jim Alaimo adds the medallions in gold or silver at no cost.

I've used DLC finishes for customers a couple times before, no complaints but I'm not really sure how much carry use the guns got or in what conditions. I carried a Kahr with a DLC finish off and on for a couple years and it hardly showed any wear at all and never had corrosion issues but I live in Oregon, its wet a good bit but rarely humid.
FWIW, we use Richter Precision for DLC finishes, they do good work. I believe they have several different versions available but the only one they apply to firearms/parts is the one they call "TitanKote C12"... It seems to have more of a very dark gray tint rather than the dead black you see on the Kahr pistols. Its still black, just not as black (if that makes any sense)...

Very nice commander BTW :)

Thanks for the feedback on the DLC provider in Penn.

Their website doesn't look especially "gun-oriented" - so I think I'll give them a call.

I have a "stainless" S.A. (1* by Yost) gun with C&S ignition system left in the white that is in dire need of protection from the elements. This may work out for it.

That is really nice. The elephant slims add a nice touch. Aren't they too fragile for daily carry? Does he add something to the finish for durability?

Bill I havent experienced Elephant ivory being exceptionally fragile.

this is from Nutmegs FAQ page.

3. I have heard that I have to remove my ivory if I plan on shooting my gun. Is this true?

Answer: Nothing could be further from the truth. That would be like selling somebody some hiking boots and telling them they can only wear them indoors. Ivory is one of the toughest grip materials available. Think about it. The elephant that wore this ivory tore down trees and unearthed large heavy stones with his tusks. Pool shooters would strike ivory Q balls as hard as they could sending them crashing into other ivory balls without damage. Usually people that spout stories regarding the fragility of ivory are selling wood or ivory look alike grips.

That is a fine looking carry gun. Good for just about anything. Love the aesthetics....HC with ivory. I am with Gary, ivory should hold up fine. Burton carried a ivory stocked gun for about 15k rounds without and issue. Good thread.

True indeed.. two sets in fact. Both were thin line stocks, one on each carry gun.

One of the sets is still going strong and about to begin a new life on what is sure to be another high-mileage pistol. Ivory is still way cool. 8)

Ivory will handle the shooting stress. There has been some breakage but that is on commonly called bark ivory if the black lines or stress lines run the thickness of grip.

I have one particular set of bark ivory waiting for the next gun from Heirloom. I have had that set of grips for about 6 years and it has been off and on several guns. Just sent it to them about two weeks ago. Used to be my grip demo gun. A 1911 not A1 serial number 191111. Way too cool.

Pictures later when time permits.

It's an exact duplicate of the old YoBo? That is good to know. I have one sitting in the safe waiting for a project.

I have some ivories I have used on my daily carry pistol for about 4 years. Easily 15,000 rounds on them. Plus a lot of trauma and drops. No issues. I mean the ivory has turned very yellow from body heat and UV exposure, but it looks fantastic.

My plan with breakage was to gather up what pieces I could find and epoxy it all back together and fill in any holes. I assumed it would give it more character and be honest wear. But there has been no need now for 4 years.

Buy and shoot elephant ivory with confidence.

Regards,
Greyson
