This gun started life in the form of a stainless steel Colt MKIV Series 80 Government Model. As with many of the Colt offerings from this era it had quite a few of the factory installed bumps, bruises, wrinkles, and warts that we so often see. But in this base gun the owner saw potential and, much like us, he looked at the gun as a great place to start a custom build. And I was more than happy to oblige by treating it to a Signature Grade conversion.
The owner had two major requests, an ambi-safety and an ambi-mag release, from there he left pretty much everything else in my hands. As usual I started with a weld-up frame and slide fit followed by a Kart barrel fit to an EGW barrel bushing and EGW slide stop. The front strap and MSH are hand-checkered at 30lpi while an S&A grip safety swings on a Wilson ambi-safety. The slide top is flattened and serrated at 50lpi in a triple curved arrow pattern which is bordered by a Gold Line front sight and a PG rear sight, with the latter blended to the matching 50lpi serrated slide rear. Best quality components are used throughout including a Wilson Bulletproof extractor, Wilson ejector, Wilson S/S hammer, C&S sear and disconnect, and Greider trigger. The frame and slide are detailed out and dressed up by a bordered slide, complete line straightening, and ball cuts at the front of the slide. Rounding out the gun are the magnificent desert ironwood stocks made by my partner Ted Yost.
Overall it makes for a pretty handy package that’s complimented by some solid carry gear. Enjoy the pictures!
