I have been seeing alot of post lately talking about two tone or reverse two tone. From what I can gather some folks think that the "original two tone" gun was a stainless slide over a blue frame. Thus apparently the reverse two tone is a blue slide over a stainless frame.

now I have been around guns for the last 40 years and until recently never heard of a reverse two tone. In fact I always thought a "real" two tone was blue over stainless.

am I crazy or is this reverse two tone some new agre gun sillyness?

You are not crazy - A "real" two tone (dark slide, light frame) is a classic look, the other or "reverse" two tone not so much.

Silliness abounds everywhere these days

I think that there is no doubt that you are correct: two tone=blue/black slide over stainless/nickel/hard chrome frame. In recent years though, shooters that cut their teeth on SIG's and glocks are more used to seeing the opposite...I think SIG has actually refered to a couple of short-run models as "reverse two-tone" since their standard two tone is stainless slide with blue frame...I guess its a matter of perspective, but I agree that two tone is shiny on the bottom, dark on top!

that makes sense. I love my sigs but I am at heart a 1911 guy. In fact the first person to introduce me to the 1911 had a Colt Commander wioth a blue slide and metalife frame. He loved that gun used to call it by name "baby". He has passed now and I wish I had baby. One day I intend to get one built just like it.

Thanks for the info guys.

I have read that Jeff Cooper was the "daddy" of the two tone. Seems he had a 1911 that was in between modifications and refinish. The frame was sans blueing pending final work. Someone saw it, took a shine to the look and it took off from there. Of course hard chrome was ultimate conclusion as no one with sense would run around with a stripped finsh long term.

Don Williams recently built an FN P35 in 'reverse colors', I think it looks outstanding!
http://www.louderthanwords.us/forum/vie ... f=6&t=7746

Both ways looks fine to me, mostly a matter of preference by the owner.

I have a few H&K USP done in 'reverse colors', but hey, its pretty difficult to hard chrome
a polymer frame! hehehe =)

The very first two-tone I saw was Cooper's Commander where he took the black finish off of the aluminum and was left with a silver frame under a blued slide.

When I had Richard Heinie build me a gun in the eighties, I wanted it hard-chromed (pre stainless days). He said he could not guarantee that the front sight would stay put in a hard-chromed slide (pre dovetail days). Thus, I ended up with chromed frame under a blued slide. Looks right to me even now.

... like many have stated, blued slide over a hardchromed frame.

I reckon it was pictures of a Pachmayr Combat Special that I first saw a two-tone Colt.

And then Wilson Combat did much to popularize the look in the '80s.

I had a Super Grade AccuComp .45 that was two-toned. (sold it for cash because I treated it like a safe queen :( )

This is my one and only two-toned Colt today.

It's an Enhanced Colt .38 Super by Marc Morganti at Gemini Customs. Built for me back in '06.

Hardchrome by Tripp (they got it right on the second try :) )

Grips are Tulipwood by Tony Rist.
