So I'm looking for a frame for a custom build project and send an email to CMC asking about availability (I have a CMC frame on my full house custom and its great). I get a VERY SHORT reply this morning saying that:
Quote:
We have discontinued all of our frames

Is this news to you too or have I simply been out of the loop?

If not CMC - WHO? Caspian?

Caspian has always been my first choice for frames and slides. They will do you right.

I can't remember where I heard this. I thought CMC, Nowlin, Wilson, and ?Kimber frames were made by Jericho.

Wilson frames are readily available. Would this work?

Les Baer is also a possibility.

If I am not mistaken Les Baer frames are made by Rock River and are more expensive than if you were to buy a Rock River.

Badger, Les Baer makes their own slides and frames. They were one of the first of the semi- custom producers to make thier own.

From the Les Baer Website:

"No 1911 frames anywhere compare to Baer frames. That’s why they’ve become the hands-down favorites of so many other custom gunsmiths. We hold the tightest tolerances in the industry to guarantee consistency. We can guarantee that consistency because we do all the machining ourselves on our own CNC equipment."

About their slides they write:" Precision machined on our own state of the art CNC equipment after heat treating to prevent warpage "

I own both and can tell you that I was more impressed with the overall quality of the RR. When I spoke with Chuck at the Shot Show last year he said that the RR components are speced out differently than the LB components (more things are oversized). Whether or not they use the same foundry I can not say but what I can say is that given the choice I would not hesitate to buy another RR frame or slide.

They (LB and RR) are both made by Lewis Machine and Tool.
The specs appear to be somewhat cosmetically different.
