I have been browsing this forum for many years. Im constantly amazed at the 1911's I see here. My favorite pistols are the ones done by Heirloom Precision.
I like the style of pistol they build. About 3 years ago I decided it was time to start looking for a base gun. I emailed Jason at Heirloom about the build details,
pricing and what they recommend for a base gun. I searched Gun broker for about a year and settled on a 50's era Commercial. I sent the pistol to Heirloom to
secure my place in line. When Ted called saying it was my turn at the bench I was more than ready. I gave Ted the specs and about 3 weeks later this is what
Ted sent me.

These grips were made by Brian at Challis grips. As you all can see Brian makes some of the best exotic wood grips available.

Absolutely gorgeous.... Did Ted sharpen up those roll marks? They appear very clean and crisp.

They'ain't no doubt about it, there is a certain awesome look and level of work that pretty much only comes outta HP. That is really nice and more so because it's a C-block.

No. The pistol had good roll marks when I bought it.

Not to re-state the obvious, but I think we would all have to agree that it simply gets no better than this. A true lifetime gun, and a credit to both the builder's skill and the owner's good taste.

Was blessed (and that is precisely the right word) with an Heirloom build myself this year -- a '71 LW Commander -- and Ted's work on the gun exceeded even the highest expectations. Not a fondler/collector-type by nature, but I do find myself spending a lot of time just appreciating the lines and level of refinement on and in the gun. You simply can't help but appreciate the extraordinary attention-to-detail and craftsmanship that goes into these pieces. As with any other piece of functional art, they come off of the bench much more than merely the sum of their parts.

My LORD!!

That is TRULY BREATHTAKING!

It made me weak in the knees for a few seconds. Congrats on getting your lifetime 1911. You're not going to put it in a safe or in some kind of shadow box frame to hang on a wall are you? That baby deserves to be USED and USED quite often.

Shoot her in good health and enjoy it for many decades to come.

One question if I may...

What type of finish is that? A type of black chrome?

Its a blued finish. I believe Heirloom calls it high polish blue.

Very impressive work there. As with all of the Heirloom guns, very impressive. The grips are great. With the trend being G10 and all of the other "non-wood" creations a good looking piece of wood make a good looking gun complete.

My Dad didn't leave me any guns. But my Son will be getting my Swenson Commander and a few other custom 1911's. For a gun nut there could be few greater gifts. The gun in this thread is stunningly beautiful in every detail. Love it, use it, and hopefully you will have a someone worthy to hand it down to someday.

I'm not sure that it is possible to really over-state the significance of what you're communicating here, Lou. I inherited very little from my grandfathers, for example, but oddly enough each did manage to pass along a single 1897 Winchester shotgun. That really caused me to begin thinking about the legacy that we pass along to our own, and as a result, I've been very deliberate in making my selections along similar lines. I've focused on 1911s. Quality -- not quantity.

Each of my children will acquire a fine Colt when I am gone, to include one not very different from Tim's (a LW Commander), since it came from the same hands. Being able to acquire, appreciate, use and then pass along pieces made to this level more than justifies the initial pain associated with making such a substantial investment, and adds a measure of real and enduring significance to having such guns in the armamentarium. We are fortunate indeed to have men among us capable of even producing such pieces, and this particular gun (above) continues to strike me as among the finest that I've ever seen.

Simply magnificent.

Someone wrote in here (LTW) the other day that 1911's have a soul. Well, as a Christian, I know they don't. But I do understand the comment and what was meant. There are hardly any two alike. Each it seems develops almost a personality of its own. The plastic guns, while being great tools and doing the same job, for half the price, just don't evoke the same emotion when displayed (unless looking down the business end, but that's a different kind of emotion, lol). Even armory 1911's have something special about them that plastic tools will never have.
The gun above is such a special example of elegant beauty, and yet it is still a lethal killing machine. A Glock is a Glock is a Glock. But 1911's are personal.
My last comment is that I hope the traditional blued finish never goes away. There is something nostalgic about a gun with a gently worn blued finish.

Lou, to add to your comment, maybe it is just me but the current crop of "plastic" wonders all seem to run fine or whatever but there is no personality or character to the piece. Just another machine, mass produced cans of beans. No rites of passage so to speak. The mentality seems to be so instant and disposable. Maybe just my age showing.

Anyway when Ted and Jason used the name "Heirloom" they mean it. In my little custom 1911 retail operation, I have seen some of the same pieces two and three times over 30 odd years but also have been very, very, very lucky to have seen and handled (most of them when packing to ship to the new owner) some of the best work by the hands of craftsman there is.

Yes, the owner of this piece did well.

And, that time has come for Charles Petrie. His service was today (Friday) at Arlington. Very sad to see him go, I did not get to meet him in person but we had many pleasant exchanges via Email. A man of the highest caliber was my impression, and his family and friends are in agreement on that! Rest in peace, Army Chief.

Chuck and I conversed about this very pistol. Specifically the grips and the fact that he had a pair like them on his Heirloom Colt CO. A second set in ivory was in the works for another build by a LTW smith at the time of his passing.

The hand craftsmanship of two LTW plank holder smiths will now be held in the hands of his three children. Pretty cool honor.

A man of the highest caliber was my impression as well Ned.
