Per a request I saw from Ned Christiansen in the "For Sale" section, here are a few pictures I have found on the web through the years of some Jim Boland's pistols. Most of these are his "Double-D" packages. I have been on the look-out for one of these for a long time. I am also including a picture of a pistol I read was a Boland/Seecamp collaboration, but I am not sure. I have a great appreciation for Boland's work, and apparently, so do a number of other people, judging by the difficulty I am having in finding any of his pistols on the market.

I have heard some folks say that Boland's pistols demonstrate greater attention to function than form, but there is something to be said for the aesthetics of engineering. Personally, I think Boland's "ray guns," with the solid tails and exaggerated thumb guards are some of the most unique iterations of the Model 1911s there have ever been.

Enjoy.

Cool pics, thanks for sharing! Boland had some neat ideas in a time when free thinking was encouraged and handgun competition was pushing limits. Seems as if we've lost some of that of late...
Dig the Seecamp Commander! What makes you think Boland was involved??

Hey Ned, glad I could share. I am usually careful to have as many pictures of my favorites as I can, both the internals and the externals, but as much of what I have been able to find has come from old classifieds, too few people take the time to really high-light the "guts" unless dealing with prospective buyers, and these guns had all been long purchased when I found the photos. Let me do some digging. I have hundreds of pictures of the masters through the years, I may have something I overlooked.

The Seecamp conversion I found randomly on another forum site. The guy said it is his pistol, and Boland did the conversion. I misspoke when I said collaboration, I think Boland just installed a Seecamp kit. I emailed the guy a couple of years ago with a few questions, but have since lost the correspondence.

I can't imagine what a 1911 looks like to some of the masters on this site. I see a Boland or a Behlert, and see that it is revolutionary, but for the true craftsman here, those who "speak the language" in a way that few others ever can, each line stands out as a link to the past, and I know you can see and translate the rational in your heads, and understand what smiths of the past were trying to accomplish. Everyone here is clearly appreciates the 1911, but for the select few who can make it a masterpiece, I believe it is more than appreciation. I just think it would be cool to be able to look at the marble, and see the statue, or likewise, to look at a painting, and to understand the brush strokes that created it.

Lots of Boland info

FYI the top two guns you posted are mine..! I think Jim Boland was the best that ever lived but too unconventional for many to appreciate.

I remember your site. When i got my new computer, I lost all of my old links. As I said above, I have been looking for a Boland for a couple of years, and while I have found a couple, I have not really found exactly what I am looking for--the more "traditional" Boland look that you have--the Double-D Cali comp-type. I agree with you, he is absolutely incredible.

The second gun I just rediscovered came from PistolSmith.com about two years ago, the same time as a similar gun was listed on AuctionArms.com. I remember a friend of mine told me about one of them, but I was out of the country away from the Internet for a bit (vacation, not anything cloak and dagger), and I missed the auction by a few days. I was really bummed because it went for a song. Later I realized that I had also missed the one on PistolSmith.com--it was likewise a great price. I have lousy timing.

Pretty sure it was Boland that built a hi cap 1911 around HK P7-M13 mags. That gun had reversed rails ala the SIG 210. It was pretty wild.

The third gun from the top is mine. Here are a couple more photos. Unfortunately when it came to me it was lacking a rear sight, didn't have the optic mount, and had a hairline crack at the front and rear of the ejection port window (man did he thin this slide down). I've never put a 38 Super round through it fearing futher damage. I did however fit a Marvel Unit 2 upper to it and I've put plenty of 22's downrange. The rails for the optic mount seem to have been added later, and I'd love to have them removed someday and the holes filled.
