Everybody loves to take a peek at the other guy's workbench. Here are a few snaps of an old-school Commander that I'm currently building. I'd like to save this thread for this gun to watch as it comes together, but please start your own thread and show us what you've got going. Let's see what you other 'smith's are working on, warts, dust, scuffs and all!

Very interested in this. As someone who has absolutely zero understanding of what actually goes on in the building of a custom 1911 -- unlike most folks here -- I expect it to be especially educational. Thanks for doing this!

Here are some more frame-related pics showing the flat VZ aluminum MSH which I've thinned, serrated and round butted. Also shown is the mag well bevel.

A little more progress to share. After fitting a Kart barrel, there was about .020" or so of slide overhang. So I whipped out the trusty 10" mill bastard file and rough filed it all level, then sanded out the file marks with some .150 grit paper wrapped around first, the file and later, the special Harrison-approved 3/8" hardwood dowel. Here are some pics, in order of progress.

Nothing to make a layman like me shiver more than seeing someone approach a nice Colt with a fresh mill bastard file. In the hands of a maestro, though, art appears. The entire rear of that gun, top to bottom, is just so...so...right! Makes you just WANT to pick it up!

An incredibly-helpful overview for guys who have spent years looking at build sheets and finished pistols, but who have rarely (if ever) been afforded the opportunity to peek behind the curtail while a project is in-progress. Gives you a whole new appreciation for the skill set involved when you see the set of hand files come out.

Have really gained an appreciation for these round butt treatments, as well, though it remains something of a mystery to me how this is actually realized. Doesn't really look like a simple jig operation, but given that the frame is involved, there has to be a careful method to the madness. Any bench artists care to offer a modicum of enlightenment to an appreciative shooter?

There's a saying in Spanish for people who eat a lot: "he eats like a new file".

Interesting stuff, John, thanks for sharing.

This Harrison-approved dowel rod, how much would it be for, say, a couple yards of that? :P

It's taken a little while to finish this one off due to in part to pieces having to go out to three different finish vendors. But, I'm liking the end results!

Took me a while to initially make the connection between the gun in-the-white and the finished product seen here. Quite the transformation, and the blended finishes really work well together. Where did the gun actually get IB? Small parts? On top of the anodizing, on the matte rounds? Sounds like a pretty forward-thinking approach.

Received it today, and I am very happy! I am by no means a photographer, but had to show it with another brilliant bit of custom work from Georgia..a Hossom Retribution. Thank you Mr. Harrison.
