I was going to have my SA 10mm customized then came up with an older Blue Delta Elite. Today I picked up a SS enhanced version. Anyone have any thoughts on which way to go? I have heard some of the earlier guns had frame cracking issues. I am going to have Bomars low mounted, front strap serrated or checkered, trigger and reliabilty work. The enhanced has the ejection port lowered and flared so that will save me $35 (hey thats a couple of boxes of ammo!!). Nothing too trick just a good carry/hunting gun. The extra Delta will go into inventory.

Gary, The port on your blue Delta may not be flared, but it is lowered. While I am not aware of any frame cracking issues with the early Deltas, they were produced at a time when Colt was having some major labor problems, and the quality was somewhat spotty at times in the first year or two. I had a customer when the Deltas first came out who bought one, and found so many problems with it that he sent it back to Colt. Apparently they agreed, as they replaced the whole gun! If yours is a good example however, I see no physical reason to not use it. Regards,

would there be any advantage or disadvantage with either? Or would it come down to personal taste? I have shot the older blue gun and seems extremely accurate and I experienced no failures in a couple of boxes of silvertips. Don thanks for the informed input.

Probably the best idea would be to build both, Gary....

Trade in the one you don't want to pay for the work on the keeper! Then you have two happy Delta owners

Despite the tongue in cheek replies from my brethren  , I don't see any advantage to building one over the other, short of personal taste. That, and the fact that you don't have to refinish the SS model, other than a bit of blast and polish.

I'm with Tim...have 'em both built. If you are a 10mm fanatic do some sort of theme or similar style build. Or build them both different. But you are probably going to end up with both anyway....right?

Don't let the "frame cracking issue" keep you from building on your early Delta Elite. If it wasn't done by Colt, your early Delta can be easily modified to eliminate the frame cracking at the slide stop port. The frame rail is removed above the hole in the frame where the slide stop goes into the mag well.

Well the poll indicates 86% people thought the blue was the way to go. But........ I decided on the stainless. This one will primarily be a hunting gun and I think the SS will hold up to the abuse and elements it will see a bit better than the the carbon steel. Now who to send it too??????

Thanks to everyone for their input!

Based on my experience with custom 10mm 1911s, Ted.

Incidentally, I had a custom 10mm done on a newer stainless Delta, and on an older blued Delta. The end result was about the same with both. I personally like the look of the old Delta better, though; I didn't like the feel of the Colt-undercut trigger guard or the look of the slanted cocking serrations as well. But that's just personal preference.

Thanks to everyone for their input. I am sending the SS off this week. I sold the blue gun then bought it back. It may be next years project. I have a FNHP 40 at Dons, the SS Delta is going to Marc Morganti, and I just picked up another BHP in 9. Too many guns not enough time (or money) :(
