This is a long-term project I’ve been working on that is getting close to completion. It will be the second gun I’ve built for the owner and, as with the first pistol, this gun has an overall theme and style to be incorporated into the build.

One of the modifications that plays into the styling of this gun is a squared and checkered trigger guard. Although quite popular on custom 1911s of the ‘70s and ‘80s it’s not something that is seen as much on the custom builds being done today. Never the less, the squared and checkered trigger guard goes perfectly with the theme of this gun and the photos below show the basics of how I progressed through the modification.

Stay tuned for a pictorial once the entire pistol is completed.

Here you can see the pistol before the trigger guard modification. The “L” shaped piece in the photo is the trigger guard insert that I made.

Here the trigger guard insert has been shaped and sized and is ready to weld.

After and bit more weld and some more shaping the trigger guard is ready to be checkered.

Sweeeet!

I love a nicely squared & checkered trigger guard and this is about as nicely done as it gets!

I thought I had the only World's Greatest Welder. Looks like there's another one in AZ...... mighty fine looking trigger guard.

I was really never a fan of the older square trigger guards but I have to say that one looks truly amazing on that Colt, great work.

Totally agree. I never cared for the 70s-80s guns with squared trigger guard. But Jason, yours just looks "right" to me. Very nice job! Is that 25lpi on the front strap??

You gunsmiths are just amazing. True artistry with metal. I would rather have a gun built by these guys than drive the nicest custom car. Truly the modern version of the master black smith. I am in awe every time I see a new build.

Very cool, Jason! Your squared trigger guard came out as perfect as I've ever seen one done. All of the lines flow nice and evenly and the 90 degree corner is exactly spot-on. Well done, my man!

I have always heated and forged to do the squared trigger guards that I've done and I always had a degree of "you never know how this will turn out" just because of the raw material you are working with being uneven as well as the heating/forging/bending process. I think you've got the better method. Thanks for showing us how it's done!

Anxious to see the final results. The GS looked like the old Kings 206 or a modern interpretation. That was always a favorite.

Excellent job Jason. You've got the better method I think. Tried doing the heat and bend once but ended up doing it this way as well.

It turned out very nicely. I bet the owner is very pleased.

Is that an old Emerson CQC6? Don't see many of those.

Excellent craftsmanship. The trigger guard took a lot of time an effort. Great job.

Saw this one in person and it looked fantastic. Got some pics of it.

Apparently I just missed you at the show, Jason. Was talking to Stan Chen and asked if "the Heirloom guys" were there and he said, "They just stopped by a second ago!"

Dangit. Maybe next year.
