How good can you get a Hi Power trigger, in terms of pull weight, slack, and travel? Can it EVER compare to a good 1911 trigger? Does the mag catch safety need to be removed in order to get said trigger pull?

I've gotten them down to 3 1/4 - 3 1/2 lbs with some work, but most of the time it's 4#. Remember, that a comparable pull weight of 4# will feel a bit lighter on a Hi-Power because of the pivoting trigger which has something of a leverage advantage. As far as overtravel and take-up, it varies a lot from sample to sample. Some have a bunch of both, and some have less. This can be addressed, and minimized down to less than 1/8" of total trigger travel if desired. One comment I often hear from 1911 shooters is that with a Hi-Power they can't feel the trigger re-set. This is true in most cases, as when shooting, the trigger mechanism on the Hi-Power is completely disconnected and the re-set occurs when the trigger lever pivots back in the frame. This occurs at about the same time the slide goes back into battery, which likely obscures the feel of the reset. If one opts to have the trigger overtravel and take-up minimized however, then it's pretty much a non-issue in my opinion as there is so little movement needed that it occurs without thought.

The mag safety removal does help to get a lighter trigger if that is what one desires, as it adds probably 4-5 ozs. to the trigger pull. I have however gotten 4# triggers with the mags safety in place.

Will one be able to duplicate the 1911 trigger on a Hi-Power? In terms of weight; up to a point yes (though 2# triggers on a HP aren't an option IMO). It will however feel different, mainly due to the pivoting trigger.

I haven't done HP's as much as Don and Heirloom, but I have been able to get under 4 lbs..... but what a ton of work it was. Adding take up and OT stops, and I felt that optimizing the frame to slide fit helped consistency since the trigger pressure takes that circuitous route from trigger to trigger bar, up to the "Bell crank" in he slide, and back down to the sear.

4 pounds would be super light on that gun. When I sent it to Steve, it had a very heavy trigger, but not much slack at all. I figured if he could just lighten the pull it would be perfect.
