Greg Derr of derrprecision.com transformed this classic. I initially wanted a retro conversion, but just don't care for the retro sights. I decided to combine some new and old and I think Greg pulled it off very nicely. Ivories are for show. She will wear some VZ double diamonds for carry.

Work performed as described by Greg on his fb page:
This project started as a used Colt Series 70. The slide to frame was welded and tightened, a new Kart barrel and EGW bushing fit. The internals were replaced with an Extreme sear and disco with their retro Colt ring hammer. A Caspian ejector and an EGW extractor. The Trigger is Harrison Design. The frame was checkered by good friend Pete Single. The MSH is EGW with a full blend and carry rounded butt. Grip safety is trimmed Heirloom style. Finish is a deep blue with some Nitre blue pins and screws. The barrel and hammer are hard chromed. The grips are provided by the client which add to the classic look.[/i]

Nice piece. I like what you both did with it.

Thank you!

Interesting, 209 views and 1 comment. I've noticed over years of lurking here that if you are not in the "club" there is little appreciation for others work. Don't think I'll be back. I love custom 1911's and appreciate what a talented smith can do with a blank canvas, but I'm not loving the elitist attitude I sense from this site.

Best to all,

Nick-

It's not that way. Everyone's work is welcome here but as I'm sure you know, traffic is down, and I think it's down in part because 'smiths are busy. This has only been up four days and a four day period of low activity is not unknown.

Elitist-- taking that as a reference to the LTW 'smiths and not all LTW members, I don't think any of us feel that way but I'll grant you it might look like it sometimes. I have been guilty of being quicker to comment on something done by one of these guys who have been good friends and associates for years.... than on the work of somebody I have not met. But most of the time, either way, it is likely to take days before I find the time to comment.

One thing I can assure you for my own part, it's not a commentary on Greg's work which I have always thought was fine. I think my fellows at LTW would agree there's room in this business for more people doing what we do. I have recommended Greg many times in the last year-plus, when asked who to take a project to.

We (the 1911 custom business in general) have had several smiths come and go in the last ten years. In fact throughout the history of custom 1911 work there has been a constant cascade of them, some stay, some burn brightly for a few years and then move on to a real job  . Some of the short-timers are really good, and some of the long-haulers probably not..... as in any other industry.

Or it could be, quite simply, that no one was impressed with the
work shown.

Nick, Thank you! It was a pleasure to bring your dream to reality. I love Colts and the traditional approach to this build. Very classy and timeless.

I'm not a Gunsmith; I have a weapon built by Tim (CT Brian) a gunsmith from this forum. My conversation and dealings with him were down to earth and straight forward. He doesn't have the "Elitist Attitude" that you mentioned in your post. I don't understand how you can assume that you know these people on this forum and are willing to paint them with your "Elitist Broad Brush". As for the weapon it's Nice & Pretty, but I like to shoot them for a full evaluation.

BTW, I think I would rather have seen it with some nice checkered wood grips or with those ivories checkered or left alone. That's just my personal tastes. The writing on those ivories draws too much attention away from other stuff that is more deserving of the attention.
