First let me start by saying, thanks for all the great info here on the boards; I have been lurking for quite awhile and finally decided to register. I am a 1911 newbie so I don't really know if this is a dumb question.....

I am having my new Colt customized and was wondering if there would be a problem with bobtailing it? Would there be an issue with reliability or function? I did search the boards first and found no information pertaining to this issue.

Thanks

Bobtailing a pistol does not interfere with the reliability or functioning of a pistol. It does make a pistol "feel" different in your hand. Some people like it, some don't. You should find a pistol with the bobtail feature and handle it some to see if it's right for you. I love my bobtailed commander. Good luck.

Should be fine, Lansa. I think the Bobtail is one of the coolest things to come along in a long time and I'm really surprised it is not more widely used. The only thing about it is that it uses and Officers' length mainspring (hammer spring), but there is really no issue with these. Obvioulsy they are shorter but nowadays they are larger in diameter and there is no issue with hammer strike or function.

They help significantly in concealment of the butt of the gun.

Some people like them and some don't. There is nothing wrong with them functionally; however I personally don't like the appearance or feel.

I prefer a 1911 with a flat MSH. On a gun with the bobtail MSH, a 1911 points low for me.
