Ok, let's get some opinions on your favorite front sight for hunting with a 10mm 1911 and the reasons for your choice (real world hunting experience appreciated). All black, tritium, fiber optic (if so, what color), gold bar or bead, ect?

Man, see what happens if you don't have pretty pistols on the thread -- no one loves you! :(

Any opinions appreciated.

I try to keep all my 1911's fairly close to my carry which has Heinie's because that's closer to a target setup and that's what I've shot the most over the years even though my eyes aren't that good anymore. Now that I think about it I currently shoot a Service Ace with stock sights an awful lot no Tritium there but something of an adjustable sight picture just the same.

Truth is before I'd get too far from my carry gun I'd go to a revolver anyway.

I suspect red dot would do better but before I go that way I'll go carbine instead of pistol.

Hoser,

It all depends on the hunting situation. I often carry a longslide 10mm when I hunt deer in stands or moderate foliage, and use a plain black serrated ramp with a Bo-Mar rear. I would think a fiber optic sight would suit well, but it needs a good bit of light to be effective. In all honesty, given the shot distance limitations of pistols (and most revolvers for that matter), any good sight you can see and shoot well out to 50yds with will do. Just practice a lot of awkward positions and light conditions, and the rest will take care of itself. FWIW, I have shifted away from using any black reticled scopes for handgun hunting of anything other than varmints, and have moved to either open sights or, as Mr. Myers suggested, a red dot. I prefer Ultra Dots, and have one on a Freedom Arms 454 and a Ruger .41 Mag Bisley.

Practice and good judgement is the most important part, IMHO.
