While I own and regularly carry 1911s; my town guns. I frequently find myself needing to carry one of my 29s out in the bush. But I prefer to carry my 29s and 24 concealed; even in the woods.

Many excellent holster makers on here but I don't see many pics of their artistry in leather when it comes to the round gun. Maybe I'm assuming too much, perhaps you don't want to make round gun rigs?

I'm in the market for a holster for a 5" S&W 24. I also have a 3" 29 that I pack a lot in the woods that needs an upgrade in leather.

Thanks for your help.

Bronco45,
I think it's just that with the abundance of semi-autos, and most people that carry CCW carrying one, there just aren't as many revolver holsters being made. Revolver holsters account for maybe 10% of my holster orders, and most of these are for the concealable J-frames.

I tried posting a photo here of a SW M29 rig that I made for M.Hall here on the forum, but I couldn't get it to post. If you e-mail me maybe I can send it to you as an e-mail attachment.

:) :) Mark: Thanks for taking the time to put round guns in perspective. I carried many revolvers for protection as a cop for 24 years. We then transitioned to Autos. My hands and muscle memory still understand and respond to the revolver regimen.

Where I walk for exercise is a wooded canyon that has recently become the domain of a Cougar. This cougar has taken several dogs and cats from local farmhouses. I may be older but not old enough to be cougar bait. Hence the 29 or 24. The 29 has the horsepower to put down a Cat even a determined one.

20 years ago I would have carried out in the open but now days people get upset when they see you wearing a gun; even in the woods.

Thanks again.

Who has a form for the short barreled (2-7/8 ) slab sided Performance Center N-frame revolvers Lew Horton sold a few years ago when S&W first went to a ball on the crane? The story was by taking the lock off the extractor S&W got the minimum length barrel with a full ejection stroke - don't know if that's so.

I've been thinking I'll have to take the dreaded Dremel to a form for the longer barreled revolvers and furnish my own form to a maker - easier than shipping the revolver around anyway.

Sorry to hear the Moscow community is perhaps less gun friendly than it once was. When open carry was the only legal way open carry was, I think, pretty well accepted.

This is an old Milt Sparks Summer Special made for a 4" N frame. It works just as well for my 3 1/2" 27.

You also might want to consider the Threepersons rig from El Paso Saddlery. Not a concealment rig perse but does well under a coat.

Mr. Del Fatti makes some great stuff. I use his moon clip carriers all the time for my cut down S&W Mod 25.

Matt-

Semi-retarded :D Doing a little uniform stuff part-time for a small town three miles from my house. My son is graduating from high school on Saturday and with college ahead I can use a few extra bucks. Since I have no talent for making splendid leather items ( like some retired cops I know:D ), or knives or 1911s or anything else of market value, I decided that this would be a good gig for 17 days or less a month. I worked for a few hours on Monday and was invited to 5 backyard cookouts. Filled up on ribs and homemade strawberry ice cream. Gotta love some of the small town benefits

Take care of yourself

W :D W talk about sensory overload. Between Del Fatti and Garrity I'm going to have to sit down and redefine my criteria for an OWB holster.

IWBs for N Frames don't work for me, too much cylinder and leather layers between skin and Levis. Getting old with an expanding waistline couldn't be the source of the problem, could it?

Matt the last one shown for a revolver is black short barreled and looks to have a Sharkskin trim. What is the name of that holster and is it recommended and/ or available for the N Frame 3"?

That particular holster is part of a giveaway centerfold for American Handgunner to go along with Marc Morganti's custom SP101 (I think you'll see it in the next issue). It's an LP with shark trim and, as is every other "pancake" style holster, the most recent evolution of Roy Baker's design. Unless the wearer's waist is especially narrow, I've always thought the LP made a good general purpose concealment holster. It distributes the handgun weight over a broader footprint on the belt and the outboard wings control both the vertical and horizontal rotational movement of the handgun (providing the holster positions the handgun center of mass close to the belt and assuming the belt is a sturdy one). Many people suggest that the wings force the gun to "ride closer to the body" but I think that's an inaccurate description. Since the gun's thickness is fixed and since on most holsters there's only one thickness (two with a belt loop between the handgun and your body). One thickness of leather (or two with the belt loop) is as close as it can ever ride to your body (without surgical body sculpting). I think the reduction in rotational movement is what people perceive as riding closer to the body. And finally, the fore and aft wings provide little "ramps" that allow the covering garment to smoothly sweep up and aver the holster pouch without bunching slightly as it might with a wrap around design. It's a small thing but I think it aids in camouflage because people are less likely to notice the "smoothed out" lump.

Probably more of my opinion than you wanted I bet :D !

I have one of Uncle Lou's "Hideout" models for my 3.5" Model 27 (that's an early S&W 357 magnum on the "N" frame). It looks great and is very comfortable. It has a very high body shield that prevents the rear sights from poking you in the side. I love it.
