Have any of you smiths taken one of these apart yet? I was wondering how many pieces are unique to this gun and how many interchange with the std 1911.

What's different are the trigger, magazine catch, the magazines, of course and the grips and grip screw/bushing arrangement. The slide stop on the version shown in your picture is also a different piece from the GI singlestack.

I had Rich Dettlehouser of Canyon Creek Firearms (http://www.canyon-creek.com) build me a .40 Cal IPSC Limited gun using a Springer hi-cap frame and mostly STI top end. It came out great. Check it out at this link

any questions about it, PM me.

Thanks for the info. One of these was purchased at a gunshow and then returned to the shop unfired and traded for a single stack. I got it for 400.00 and was wondering how much of the parts were upgradeable. Does the Para aftermarket stuff work in them? I'm hoping the steel frame will be less "flippy" when you get down to the last 5 rounds or so than a Para is.

Yes, most of the "for Para" parts will work, including the S&A Full Magwell and triggers. The Para grips dont automatically fit onto the Springer. I tried to switch my Para grips onto my Springer and it appeared that I would have to grind out some of the inside towards the back to fit the contours of the frame. I chose the Springer to build my IPSC gun on rather than the para gunsmith kit because I wanted the forged frame of the Springfield.

I have one of these on order, and am trying to find out as much as I can about aftermarket bits. Deb at Springfield says the bolt pattern of Para grips is different from the Springer, but I've seen pics of a Springer fitted with Hogue Para grips, so I'm not sure what the truth is. The supplied mags are apparently not very good. A couple of guys on 1911forum swear by the (13rd) MecGar mags that can be had for $20. They say that the factory Para mags that were banged out to beat the AWB are not of the best quality. There's an Arredondo kit that will increase capacity to 15-17 rounds, depending on the donor tube, but they cost $50 each. Does STI make a mag, or tube that fits a Para?
The trigger guard certainly looks . . . strong. Unusual contour where it meets the front strap.
