I've been collecting guns for about 45 years now , mostly hunting weapons and lately more defensive arms . Nothing much remains unfired, and I've always had an interest in traditional American arms like sixguns and lever action rifles . Aside from a Winchester 71 and a Ruger Blackhawk I've never ventured very far in this arena though . The cost of old Winchesters and SAA Colts was prohibitive and I wanted guns I could shoot .

While contemplating a custom revolver order I stubbled across this .45 LC built on a Ruger Bisley for sale on Gunbroker. This is a new Ruger Bisley as "perfected" by Hamilton Bowen of Bowen Custom Arms Corporation. The barrel has been cut to 5.5", a Bowen Arms front sight installed, a target length ejector rod & housing have been fitted, Bowen Arms rear sight installed, frame and hammer case colored by Doug Turnbull, cylinder throats reamed, deluxe action tune, and lanyard ring installed. The gun has been test fired only. I'm in love with it and plan to try to take a deer with it later this fall . My old eyes will be tested if it's at first or last light . I've gotten somewhat accustomed to tritium , colored inserts and white outlines , and as sweet as the sights are on this piece they are all black , and I can't see them in low light  . That and my shaky shooting should make any whitetail within 50 yards absolutely safe  .

The pics were taken by the seller . I've put a pair of ivories on it already ! I feel like a gunfighter everytime I pick it up :D ...Tom

That, Sir, is an absolutely beautiful revolver. I love big bore Rugers. IMHO they are far and away the best factory revolvers made aside from the Freedom Arms guns, once they have been tuned. Smiths and Colts are pretty and are great for actions, but the Rugers are just amazingly strong and simple. GREAT FIND!

I am not a big Revo fan but that is one sharp looking six shooter. I hope you enjoy it.

For now Mr. Hall , the "Ivories" are Lett Grips ivories as supplied to Ruger . I guess the material might be micarta . I'm deciding between ivory and sambar stag for the permanent grips . For this gun I would prefer stag , but good stag grips are hard to find right now. The Lett grips were immediately available.

In answer to Joni Lynn's question, "Beautiful gun!! You did well getting that one. Did I miss it or was the cylinder also replaced?" . I wondered myself but on close inspection it appears to be a Ruger Bisley cylinder as it's a 6 shot . The engraving also says "Ruger Bisley" . It's my understanding that all the work on the cylinder was polishing the notch leedes and squaring to the barrel's forcing cone included in the action work and tuning ...Tom

:D Thanks Mike . I sure hope I have a picture to show with a deer . My friend claims to have a spot for one within 50 yards , but it's still hunting , and that's full of surprises .

As an update , I found the PERFECT pair of genuine stag grips. They are calling them exhibition grade and in fact they might be. Guess how much they want for them ? Two Hundred and Eighty Five bucks  :o  . I'm still thinking that one over :? . What do you guys think ? The $70 micartas look pretty good now :))...Tom

Mike , are those checkered Lett Grips ? The picture shows perfectly but the text is all in computer program speak :( , so I don't know what you wanted to say . Both the gun and the grips look great !

Fellas , I bought the gun from Mike Fletcher . It was a painless experience and he was a fabulous guy to deal with . His website is http://www.tulsagunroom.com/ and I highly recommend him...Tom

Tom,
I have a Ruger new model Blackhawk that was also "perfected" by Bowen several years ago now. I carry it in a shoulder holster when in the field. FYI, If you reload you might wish to try 5.2 grains of Hodgens Titegroup w/250 grain lead bullet at 750 fps. This is very accurate and friendly load and very effective on deer sized animals, especially with a good hard cast, flat bullet. They penetrate like you wouldn't believe. If you wish to step it up a notch, I recommend a 300 grain Long Flat nosed bullet w/gas check as made by Beartooth Bullets in Dover Idaho. Loaded with 21 gr. of H 110 w/magnum primers, they will reach about 1350 fps. in a 5.5 inch bbl. I can tell you they will shoot through both shoulders of an elk on a broadside shot and end to end through black bear if one is facing you. In both instances the bullets did not deform. You might research old issues of HANDLOADER magazine for Ross Seyfriend's article on this load. He actually uses one more grain than I do. The recoil is substantial but w/ the Bisley grips not unpleasant; that's the beauty of the Bisley grip. If you do not handload, Buffalo Bore loads the same bullet, but at about a buck a shot. I'll be 60 on my next birthday and a hunter for most of 50 of those years, and this remains my favorite in-the-field handgun. Hope this helps.

Hi Sir, and congratulations you got an extraordinary six shooter, i´m also a big bore sixgun enthusiast, and your´s is one of a kind, from one of the best custom makers around IMO.
I would like to have a similar gun on my hands, but for me is really hard to get my hands on one :( , specially down here in Perú,
I own a couple of SA Rugers & FA 454 but love the grip and balance of the R. Bisley 45LC for hunting, but still looking for the oportunity to import one of thoes beuties from one of the top custom gunsmiths.
I will say yours deserves a presentation grade grips, but from my experiance falling from a horse and in to the rocks and over my revolver scratching my exposed grip panel and holster , i will prefer the Polymer grips for field use, and after you take that monster buck you can have a custom stak grips made out of your trophy buck

Enjoy it and good luck on the fields. :D
