Hey all,
Well, after my "King's sight" post, I got to thinking. Now we all know that the new Colt 70's are the "darling" for using as a base gun. I have one (just don't have the heart to get it "cut up" though) and I love it. Now, I'd like to have a "bare bones" type blaster (like the one I linked to in the King's thread) built up, so naturally I'm thinking of getting another one.

However, here's the "moral dilemma" part. I'd like to have this pistol parked. Something just tells me though that getting a Colt 70 parked will somehow send the planets out of alignment, cause plagues of locusts, and generally get the god's panties (or togas) in a bunch. Do any of y'all have pics of a nice Colt that's parked? I toyed with getting a SA WWII or milspec, but unfortunately, I think that even if I do I'd be constantly questioning myself; "this is as good as if I had it built on a Colt, right?" So what would you recommend? What about a "matte" bluing? Could that be a less sacreligious alternative?

Help me fellers!

Rich

Aren't Colt's 1991A1 all parkerized? Like the previous gentleman said, do whatever makes you happy, it's your gun.

The old roll marked ones were, but all the new 1991's are blued, as are the 70 series.

Some of the ORM 1991s were parked. The NRM 1991s that I've seen have all been blued. I have a Springer Mil-spec that is a VERY solid gun- the slide to frame fit is tighter than my Colt 1991, but very even and well fitted. The barrel lockup is also tighter than the Colt. I would have no problem using this as a base gun for a custom job, and very well may in the future. Use whatever gun appeals to you most, and make it the way YOU want it.

Nope.

A nice alternative might be polishing the slide to a satin finish with everything else a matte blue finish. IMO, park is not a great finish. Blueing isn't the second coming either but it is classic and tends to look good even worn. Nothing wrong with park on a SA if that is what you want.

But, if the new 70's are nirvana then park and make a "less" gun your simple style gun. Or do exactly what makes you happy.

Happy Holidays!

Do what you want with it and don't look back.
Anybody else who doesn't like it enough to take time out of their day to question it needs something to do.

I got one of the Colt WWI "re-issues" recently. Nothing remarkable by any means, but a nice gun and a neat idea.
It was used, and the previous owner had high profile fixed sights installed (in fact, they appear to be King's Hardball sights). The gun came relatively cheap because of those sights.
Some people who had seen it in the shop got all excited over "what had been done" to it.

I thought such fuss was silly, and still do.

It isn't anything collectible.
It made it easier to shoot.
It can be changed back, like almost anything can.
And it saved me the trouble of doing it.

There are a lot of guns that I don't like to see modified in any way. Naturally, if it's really old, a one-of-a-kind, an experimental or rare version, or had been owned by someone famous or infamous it's best left alone.
There are few Colts made in the last 25 years that fit that description. If it makes it more useable or serviceable- go ahead and do it.

I've told this before, but it's one of my favorites:
I was in a shop when a guy came in to pick up a Colt SAA from the Custom Shop. It had been on order for months. It was an "Engraving Sampler" that featured several (four?) different engraving styles on it.
He opens the package and the box, picks up gun and looks it over.
A crowd had gathered.
He took it, brought the hammer to half-cock, touched the cylinder, and....
ZZZZZZZiiiiinnnggg!!!!!!

He gave the cylinder a spin that gave Colt collectors strokes.
The onlookers in the shop went nuts.

I thought it was great. It was his gun. He ordered it, paid for it, and waited to get it. When it came, he enjoyed it.
Good for him.

The nice thing about your dilema, your choice is not "set in stone" as they say. Give the park a try, if you don't like it you can always change it.
