I think I know. I think I bought a LW slide on a Series 70 Goverment Model frame (because it doesn't say Combat on the slide). But I only paid 400.00 for it, so will make a nice build gun

It most certain CAN make a nice gun... Looks just like MINE!

Steve Bailey built this one for the SHOT show last year, and I was lucky enough to be able to acquire it from Steve!!!

Blue, Nope, it looks like an early style Combat Commander. It wasn't till a bit later that Colt started marking the lightweight guns with that designation (probably just for clarification). If you had a Gov't frame, the dust cover on the frame would be farther forward on the slide than it is now. It also has the early commander style grip safety, with all of it's sharp edges. According to my RL Wilson book on Colts, your S/N was made in 1970, and is a Commander serial number. You got a good buy!

Oh yea... Mine is a 1950s era slide on a later frame like yours. Build it up... It's a great combo!

ALRIGHT! I'm excited now! I've wanted a gun with the neat old style roll marks. The Horsey's head is gone, but for the price I won't complain. I have the striped frame in front of me on the desk. The surface rust inside the magazine well and the mainspring housing all cleaned up with a brush and some MPro7. No bad rust or pits. The gun appears to have been carried a lot but shot little.
Thanx for the info guys. I'll see ya at SHOT!
Scott

I've got one like that in 38Super. Some will challenge the mainspring housing as being non original, but mine came just like that from the factory. You got a good 'un!!

Another quick question. The thumb saftey, slide stop & trigger are highly polished blue steel. Would these have been original or added later?
I've started a list of what I want to have done to this. I like the serrations on yours Mark.

They look original to me.... at least from the old colts I have seen. I have two 1951 LW Commanders, and they both have similar parts.

As for the OTHER Commander...

WOW! That's want I want! I may have to make my gun a "snowbird" and give it a winter vacation in AZ. :D
