When the commander was origionally designed, why didn't they just chop the frame and shorten the slide? Rather than mess with slide stroke length and other things?

Shortening the slide only would make the available space for the recoil spring too short, so they had to"cheat" to get some coils back by moving the back of the slide's spring tunnel rearward and by moving the frame's bang-off surface rearward.

I'd like to throw my ignorance into the hat. So, am I to understand that you can't swap a Commander slide onto a Gov't frame and vice versa?

Fundi, Well, you can put a Gov't slide on a Commander (or Officers) frame, but you would have this rather unsightly gap between the frame dustcover, and the recoil spring tunnel on the slide (about 1/8" or so), where you would be able to see the recoil spring. Additionally, due to the reprofiling of the Commander/OACP's frame rails, you would have interference between the link lugs and the recoil spring guide. In the reverse situation, you would have a lot of overhang from the frame dustcover onto the recoil spring tunnel, and more travel than you needed. Whether this would cause any functional problems, I'm not sure, tho' the recoil spring would be less pretensioned due to the .100 setback of the rails on this frame. Best,

Thanks Don. After that very indepth reply I realize if it wasn't for guys like the LTW smiths guys like me would be throwing rocks!

If I decide to dabble in weapons building do you think Uncle Lou could craft a sling with shark trim on it to throw my rocks with ?
