ok guys. fig. i would get some help from the boards. i shoot p.p.c. mainly right now only the matches held by clubs.

anyway. i know its a revolver game, but i like to go against the grain. i currently shoot a glock 34 (idpa/uspsa game gun) and do fairly well, for what it is. (550 out of 600) avg. but im hankering for a custom 1911 just for p.p.c.

and in fact mostly/all indoor.(no 50'yrds.)

ive got an idea of what i want but would like any suggestions from guys that have built these guns, played these games ect.

and lastly. any preferance of a .38super over a .45acp?i know the .45 gives you the size advantage, but i didnt know how "light" the .38super would shoot. the ammo will be handloaded semi wadcutters.

thanks.

I have been using a nearly stock Kimber in .45ACP for this same game. The only non-standard component is the Bo-Mar sight I had installed to replace a broken factory sight. As I am also in Michigan, I imagine we have probably shot a few of the same matches.

In any event, using my Kimber, I have been shooting pretty consistently in the high 570's this season. I told my shooting buddy that when I could shoot a regular 580, I too would buy a new gun set up for the game, though I am leaning towards a revolver. I have not found any information on a good PPC revolver smith, with the exception of Clark Custom. All the guys I talk to at the dinners after the match say they had theirs built so long ago they don't remember who did them. Not much help.

In any event, you shouldn't have any issues using a .45 as compared to a 38 Super. I replaced the mainspring in my Kimber with a 9 pounder, and shoot a light handrolled target load. The recoil is negligible. Good luck, and if you get any information on who to use for a revolver build, please pass the information along to me. :)

I know the guy you're looking for if you want a PPC revolver. Call Dave Sams at (804) 375-3782. He builds "one hole at 50 yards" type guns and I know he actually likes building PPC guns on occasion just to mix things up a bit. I think Witherspoon or Al Shear can vouch for his abilities with triggers/actions. I'd bet he could build a helluva PPC semi-auto, too.

Don't forget to take a look at the 9mm for a PPC auto. The 9mm's pretty much rule the roost at the Nationals.

is it mainly because of low recoil?

i like shooting 9mm. for a lot of reasons. $$ being the 1st one. lol.

wasnt last year or somewhere close to that the first year an auto won the nationals?

does the bomar sight rib make a "huge" differance? i fig. the 3 way adjustable sight on a gun with a flat topped/serrated slide would do about the same thing right??

Recoil is big issue for alot of folks, especially when shooting on the barricade. Those 9's really shine in that regard, less time recovering from recoil and more time concentrating on sight alignment and trigger pull.

The full rib is not really needed, it does add a little weight to the slide and sort of softens the recoil a bit like a full rib BE wad gun. The 3 position rear sight is a neat set up especially when shooting at 50 yds.

Another option is the S&W PPC9 as the name implies it is a PPC auto (built on the 5900 double stack frame) It has an Aristocrat 3 position mini rib and is extremely well built/fitted and a real tack driver.

The local PD team here shoots long slide Nowlins in 9mm. Seem to do pretty good with them. I will try to get some pics of some of their guns.

The Nowlin's have ruled the open auto class in the last few years. But they are having some problems I hear. another subject altogether. But IMHO the way to go is a 6" 1911 with a full 3 position rib sight. U just cant beat a full rib sight for PPc. Alan Tanaka at AT custom is building several of the champions auto's. If it were me I would give Rock River a call and have them put a full rib on a 6" 9mm. They are nice guns. 9mm also rules the winners circle in ppc auto class. If you are interested in a s&w ppc 9 dont buy one new most serious competitors are ditching them and going to 1911's. The smith gun has ruled for a long time but there is just no comparison to a quality 1911 imo. There are a lot of smiths floating around at reasonable prices and that is what I would start with until I could afford a 1911. Just some food for thought if anyone out there has a connection at smith might drop the "man that would kick butt with a 1 piece full aristocrat rib on top" line on them!!

Oh and for a revo find Bob Jones he is building the border patrols guns and they are king of the winner circle for revo's. .38 k-frame 1.5" dia barrel and a sunk aristocrat rib check out a pic of jerry keefer revo under revolver section.

Since you aren't going to be shooting outdoors, a 6" gun and adjustable rib would be a large expense with little justification. However, a 9mm/.38 Super would.

I shot PPC with a pistol back in the mid 1980s. Yes, a .45 is accurate, and you can load it down, but even the lightest load you can get to cycle reliably is going to be heavier than a powderpuff 9/38 load. I even tried loading 200 grain SWCs backwards to get a better burn on the (almost microscopic) powder charges I was using to push the things at 600 fps.
I had a 596 average that year. I built a .38 Super in-between seasons and went to a 598 average the next season. You can easily get the 9/38 gun to run with a 125 lead round nose at 800 fps. (I managed 700, but I have a very hard lock on my wrist when aiming, and no-one else could shoot that gun without regular smokestack malfunctions.)

In a pure accuracy setting, the 9mm has a small (even minute) advantage. The Super is less fussy in feeding. They are equivalent in reloading work.

Were I to do it again, I'd build a 5" 1911 in Super (I have the dies, the data, the mags) with an adjustable sight, say a Bo-mar. No rib.

thanks patrick. :) i know your north of me. (i think) but this year i shot. taylor pistol club, oakland county sherriff, and prob. will do wyandotte later this year.

i shot my "other" game gun . my glock 34. i know its not meant for this type of comp at all. but its better than not shooting!lol. and with the lewis scoring system unless you shoot a 599 or higher your never gauranteed to win anything. (and even then ive seen the 599's lost by the x count).

my best this year, with lancer downloaded ammo. (fmj, 895fps) was a 540. which im pretty happy with, considering the gun and ammo. im really happy with the ammo for "production" type stuff. not quite the handloaded grade, but close for someone that doesnt reload yet.lol.

anyway, looks like ill probably, do the .38super.(plan on reloading soon) i can get a 70 series (i think) colt pretty darn cheap of a friend. use that as a base gun probably......
