Being an owner of SA Custom pc9404 (and planing to order their PPC Gun) , I noticed that there is very little talk about their custom models. I see plenty about guns from Les Baer and Wilson, etc. Also I almost never see any of SA Customs for sale. Anyone out there has one? How do their guns compare to the very best custom 1911's? Retail prices on them are right there with Baers and Wilsons. 1500.00- 3000.00

I have shot the PRO model, I was friends with a guy on the SRT or HRT team with the FBI and his shot great. The frame to slide fit was flawless and the barrel lock up was solid. You could make one solid ragged hole with it at any distance with in 25 yards. I did not like the 25lpi on the front strap, Sprinfields 25lpi is way to sharp and it hurts my hands. If I had a chance at getting the same model as his at a good price I would. I have a wilson CQB and IMHO I think it is right there with it in quality and fit and finish. It has some features I dont need like ambi safety and mag well but those are minor things that can be changed, but its just my .02

What I've seen from the SA Custom Shop has been very nice. I know a couple of the guys there and they have the right attitude towards building guns.

I own two PROs. They are very good tools, and well built. I have seen many, many guns from SA Custom, Wlson and Baer, and the SA Custom Shop guns were, in my opinion, superior in fit and finish everytime. They don't have the mystique that the others do, and in my ten years in retail, I have found that this has a lot to do with perception.

BTW, the checkering is 20lpi, not 25lpi.

There are two smiths at Springer's custom shop that are also members of the American Pistolsmith Guild.

That speaks volumes...

I should also tell you that the Pro model that I shot was one of the first that Novaks shop did and the custom shop from Springfield. I have not seen one of the newer ones that are a pure Springfield. That may be why the fit and finish was better.

I have a Professional I purchased several years ago and it has become one of my most carried pistols.

Keep in mind that all the features, to include the ambi safety and sharp checkering, were FBI specs.

My gun has about 15K rds. through it with very little problems. I had to have the front sight replaced after it worked loose. I also had replaced the mag springs in the Wilson 8 rounders.

Note that any gun with the Custom Shop logo that is returned goes to the front of the line at Springfield. They take very good care of their customers.

Regards,

Rob

I am looking to get the FBI gun.If its anything like my PC9404 I wll be very happy. My PC9404 have many times shot 2" groups at 50 yards from the ransom rest. With FED.230 JHP +p ammunition! If I use Hardball or any quality JHP's it as reliable as my 92FS Berreta's ( The most reliable handgun I ever seen. Teaching cops for the last 7 years, I saw many different guns on the line) Anyway, I think that SA Customs dont take a back seat to anything at any price.

i still think the s.a. pro is the best bang for the buck going...especially if you can get one under 2k. (they are out there)

yeah its not a "custom" but about half the price anyway. i kind of think of it as the poor mans custom....lol .

i would love to have a tricked out custom from any of the smiths on here, but my conscience gets to me about spending that kind of dough on a custom right now...

one day....

I understand You wanting a true custom build just for You. However I 'll put my SA custom 38 super steel gun agaunst anything available at any price. We are now only talking about function and accuracy. I must say , I have seen some real works of art from some of the true custom makes. But I dont think that they ALWAYS make a better gun. For exapmple my old p210-5 ( with fed.124 match ammo) whill smoke anything of the bench at 50 yards. And its just a good production gun.

I am the lucky owner of an SS TRP, That had a small problem with mags sticking, so SA said send it back, so I did. When it came back it ran better than I could imagine, and so far I can punch centers at the back of the range, and took a head size pumpkin measured at 162 ft. it is just damned accurate. I agree the checkering is a bit sharp, but Im tuff! LOL

My milspec will hopefully go to John here in GA for a carry package.

Which ppc gun are you looking at and what level of shooter are you in ppc send me a pm and i'll give you some info on ppc auto and who to look at as far as that goes. But that being said I have handled and owned more springers than anything else and I think their guns are only getting better. Their custom shop work I think is top notch for a factory custom shop.

SA's custom shop does indeed do some nice work.

I had an old TRP that looked like sh$t, the finish was terrible, the slide to frame fit was sloppy and I sent the gun up to them.

Came back refinished, tight as a drum, and with a new front sight. All for $156.

I could not come up with anything bad to say about their work, except they do cut their 20LPI frontstrap VERY sharp. Its like gripping a damn pineapple. I didn't like that very much, but besides that everything they did was flawless.

LOL actually that is why I netted my TRP for a measly sum of 800.00 even.
My friend bought it new, shot it a few times , it didnt shoot well he said and he hated the checkering from day one, so he now has an XD .45 14 rd kit and I just smile when I shoot my TRP.

Oh , he also had, ( key word HAD ) a Rock River National Match preban, that has been to FT Benning and tuned by a national level shooter, ( took 2nd place first time shooting that rifle) and is 1/2 MOA ..and well he wanted a new camera lens ( 1300.00 cannon something special yada yada, ) so it now lives in my gunsafe. We all need a friend like that. Im working on his S&W 357,

which reminds me of a joke:

There were these two old farmers, one had an old nag of a horse, and his friend asked could he buy it, so farmer A sold it to farmer B for 200.00. Farmer B nursed it back to health, cleaned up the coat and had it out in the pasture and farmer A comes by, sees the horse and offers to buy it back, so farmer B sells it back for 400.00. farmer A now has his horse back and continues the rehab, and soon the horse is beautiful , shiny coat, main and tail are flowing. Farmer b happens by and sees the horse, and is so impressed he buys the horse back for 800.00.

A month goes by and farmer a, anxious to the see the horse, goes to see his friend farmer b and the horse, he gets there and then farmer b tells him that he sold the horse to another guy for 1000.00 and farmer a remarks, "why did you go and do a stupid thing like that , we were making good money on that horse".

That's a good one.

All my friends are way too gun saavy, so I can't get anything off them.
