.......I salute those lost and those currently fighting for our freedom. May you be kept safe from harms way. May you return to your homes and loved ones with mission accomplished.

Here are a couple of snaps of LTW's own Capt. Jim Tighe. Thank you for your service to our country.

I join Tim in thanking those who have served and are serving our country. Without such individuals, we would not enjoy the freedoms we consider so vital.

Special thanks to Capt. Tighe. Stay safe my friend.

Mark

And a "Good Luck and God Bless" from me also.
I hope they are all successful in their mission, and suffer no more casualties. Ever.

As an aside- I'll be spending Memorial Day weekend with the family in Evansville, IN. There is something there I've wanted to see for a while: The LST 325.
For those that don't know, they have an operational WWII LST on display on the river. It acts as a sort-of "mobile museum", which travels around to various events like festivals and hydroplane races. It participated in the invasion of Sicily, and was a "standby" craft for the Normady invasion.

I also want to see the Whirlpool factory. That may not sound interesting until one learns that it was a Republic Aviation factory during WWII producing P47 Thunderbolt fighter planes.
Later, it was taken over by International Harvester to manufacture refrigerators. When the Korean War began, IHC manufactured M1 Garands in that factory.

I couldn't think a better weekend to see these things.

I can't say it better than Tim did.

My thoughts go to all who serve and who have served.

Thank you to those protecting me, my family and country now. You have been given a daunting task that you perform admirably! I salute you all.

Al Shear

I hope that all our men and women in the service know how much we love and appreciate them. It's land of the free because it's home of the brave.

God Bless them all!

I also want to thank our brave men and women in uniform, past and present. People like our own Jim Tighe, Chip Brezee, and Al Shear...and all of their brothers and sisters in arms. I hope that while the public celebrates the "unofficial beginning of summer", cookouts, sales and whatnot, that they will take a few minutes to appreciate the true meaning of this holiday, which, if not for the brave souls that it remembers, there may not be any other holidays to celebrate! One of the greatest honors of my life has been the opportunity to work along side Americas warriors at Fort AP Hill, Virginia, and I thank the lord for this blessing!
God bless each and every one of our servicemembers and their families here at home, and the same to all of our great people here at LTW, who honorably embody EVERYTHING these troops are fighting to preserve!!

In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Gentlemen.....please forgive me for just one more and an explaination! This day is for me probably THE most important holiday there is...2 of my great grandfathers were civil war vets, my grandfather a WWI vet (buried in Arlington), and my father and uncles all faught in WWII and Korea. To make MY life even more appropriate, I was born on the last observed TRADITIONAL Memorial Day, 30 May 1970! Here is one more poem that I feel needs to be seen by more folks!

b]FREEDOM ISN"T FREE
©Copyright 1981 by CDR Kelly Strong, USCG (Ret).

I watched the flag pass by one day.
It fluttered in the breeze.
A young Marine saluted it,
And then he stood at ease.
I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
With hair cut square and eyes alert
He'd stand out in any crowd.
I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil?
How many mothers' tears?
How many pilots' planes shot down?
How many died at sea?
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
No, freedom isn't free.

I heard the sound of taps one night,
When everything was still
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
That taps had meant "Amen,"
When a flag had draped a coffin
Of a brother or a friend.
I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.
I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington.
No, freedom isn't free.

Well I spent the day with my Son, a Soldier with the 1st Cav Division. We had planned on doing the whole weekend but he is leaving tomorrow @ 4:30am for training @ Ft. Polk La. The training is in preperation for his unknown(next 4-5 months) departure to Iraq. There were several years that I didn't know if he would make it through school much less amount to anything. He graduated, moved out for about 1.5 years and then a year or so ago called and said I'm going in the Army. With all the stuff going on it was a hard time with the wife. Of course I reminded her that I had been in the Army for the 1st 9 years we were married. Needless to say after a year my Son is now a man that I hold as my equal. I too salute those who have served are serving or especially the one who lost a loved one that was serving. But as the father of troubled teen I also thank the Military for making great citizens out of our children. Thank You...

To the "rough men (and women) who stand ready to do violence in our stead", thank you for all you do.
